Just wondering how high the price of gas has to go before some of us will reconsider purchasing a 500 horsepower Shelby that only drinks premium and only goes 250 miles on a tank of gas?

1. $70 a barrel.

2. $80 a barrel.

3. $100 a barrel.

4. Don't care...I'm getting one no matter what gas costs.

Yeah, yeah, I know, this should be a poll.

Personally, I can't help feeling that if the cost of gas keeps skyrocketing, even a regular GT is going to be too expensive to feed.

 

Gas just hit $2.99 for 93 here and I'm sure it will be $3.00+ by the end of next week. It hurts to fill up the tank but it hasn't changed my driving habits.......yet.

I'm buying my brother's Civic ... yeah I know, a Civic. It is cheap on gas and I can drive it on bad weather days to keep the miles down on the Shelby. On the nice days though ...

 

I have a feeling that if you can afford the price of the car and the insurance than you won't worry too much about the price of gas.

 

I am on target with my prediction from last year. $3.00 per gallon at the end of December. In two more years gas prices are going to be $5.00 a gallon. If I get the new Shelby, its going to be only a weekend car. The rest of the week my 10 speed bike is going to keep me in good shape.

 

It wont even take 2 years to get to 5 bucks.. it will be $5 by 2006.

I heard somewhere else that its not the fact that we dont have enough oil.. its the fact that we dont have enough refineries. The last refinery was made 30 years ago..

 

The increased demand from China and India are also contributing to it. They are both increasing in the number of cars owned due to higher incomes for families there. More people can afford the cars and so there is more demand for fuel ... and not much more being refined.

They need to buy the hybrids so we can keep our muscle.

 

Anyone else notice the correlation to Shelby putting his name on a car with the price of gas?

That's correct. The bottleneck is refining capacity not oil supply. I work for a major refiner and the plant I work in celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2003. The newest refinery we have is around 30 years old.

 

I do agree with your statement - just not the car to which you're applying it. I would offer that it's more accurate to say that if you can afford the price of a Ferrari or Porsche and the insurance, then you won't worry to much about the price of gas.

On the other hand, Mustang is a car for the masses (Shelby too, though to a lesser extent). I think a number of people will stretch and go into debt for a Shelby, who might have otherwise bought a GT...leaving little money to feed this beast.

At $5.00 a gallon for premium fuel and a range of 250 miles, I think most people will have to think twice about this. I also think - given a $5.00 per gallon scenario - that it may nix other manufacturers' plans to bring out future muscle cars (i.e. Chevy, Dodge).

 

From what we have heard about the allocation for this car, they will be hard to get ahold of and thus will most likely carry large markups. This will likely price them far out of the range of those who would have went with a GT but will stretch to get the shelby. Also, the insurance in going from a GT to a shelby will likely be a large jump since we are talking almost 500 HP. With the markups we've seen on GTs, I don't see this car being as afordable as we all hope it will be.

 

The problem with this is that increase of gas prices are psycological driven by consumers and there is no shortage of crude, we don't even get it from Iraq where the terrorist are doing the damage, and as far as I can see no gas station has run out of gas yet have they?

I say a few curse words everytime I fill my tank up. It's "only" up to $2.73 for premium here. I figured if I re-flashed to use regular unleaded, I'd only save a whopping $3.20 a fill up.

 

What really stinks is that gas is only 5 cents a gallon in Iraq. Yeah, 5 cents per gallon. I have some friends over there who saw this. The government in Iraq subsidizes it. It only cost 38 cents a gallon in Iran and that is a fact. Whats up with that ??? :scratch: :angry: High gas prices killed off muscle cars back in the 70's and looks like a repeat of history. Why is it when things start looking good something always happens to bring it down?? Yeah, lots of guys wanting a Shelby will be hard put just to get the car more or less feed it with high priced premo. Heck lot of guys are hard put to get a GT. We seem helpless to control the situation.

The price of gas affects absolutely everything in life, from the cost of driving to the price of groceries.

And yes, it does affect me, I am considering a bike now, 70mpg sounds good to me

 

I am stubborn, I will drive what I want to drive, my economy vehicle is only 1800cc's but only has a 4.5 Gallon tank $13 to fill up vs $50 in my truck

They have a lot of oil and refineries i guess.. But its not only gas thats cheap their.. everything is cheap in Iraq. You could build a mansion their for bout the same price as a fully loaded mustang GT. My parents own a lot of land in Iraq and its only worth $5,000. But thats not counting how much the oil under it is worth

I dont get why they just dont build more refineries if that is the problem with the gas prices..

 

Those folks....When they can find work only make A few dollars a day. We are almost certainly entering a time when fuel prices will go up for a while. I'll still make time to drive ......just maybe a bit less.
