Yes, it's an automatic....
One thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned since the '05 came out is the gearing from the factory.
I'm not sure what the V6 manual trans comes with but the GT has 3.55 gears while the auto has 3.31's. Looks to me like Ford had to disadvantage the autos a little so they wouldn't outrun the manuals.
As you can see by my sig, I prefer the manual, but something just doesn't add up. In the old 5.0's the manual had 2.73 gears (optional 3.08) while the autos had 3.27's and still couldn't keep up... not by a long shot. The last generation both had 3.27's, and of course the manual was faster.
I'd like to see what would happen with an '05 if you made it a fair fight and put the same gears in both.

All V6's come with 3.31's. Auto or Manual. Manuals still edge the auto.
Back then when they had lower gearing in the back, didn't they have lower geared tranny's, so it really isn't much different today.
With our 3.31's we top 3rd out at just over 100mph, the GT tops it's 3rd gear at just over 100 mph too. The way the tranny is geared has a huge factor, and a V6 Auto with 3.31 is way too low because they V6 & GT autos are not geared any different, but were favoroed for the GT not the V6. For a V6 to get it's potential it's almost a requirement to upgrade on gears.

According to Ford - i had asked when i got mine (@ the time they were the only GTs available and there was not really a choice since i had already seen the Stang and fell in love : did't want to wait for months to get one at that point & this one had all the factory options: so my best bet was to learn during the buying process) - that the 5R55S 3:31 s are close to the standard 3:55 s - with closer spaced gear sets and the best auto tranny yet for a Stang - the ETs are around three tenths secs. longer than the 5 sp in stock form - yes, the bogging during launch up to 2 nd is the Spanish Oak - but a Tune and / or reflash takes care of it - changed the shift points on mine and launch is no problem - also changing the torque curve with this combination is like driving a different tranny than the stock was - you can feel the low end torque more !

I agree... a tune is a night and day difference with this car! I did a g-tech run yesterday... my 1/4 time was 14.90 @95.6MPH with 0-60 at 6.34. Hopefully I'll be taking the car to the track to get some official times...
