I-70 west

I just finished a cross country trip with all hiway cruise control driving and only averaged 26 mpg with a single tank best of 27.3 mpg. I`m at just over 8000 on the odometer. I was looking for 30mpg on the odd tank. has anybody achieved this?

EPA rating is only 25 MPG, most vehicles do not get anywhere near the EPA. If you are getting 26-27.3 mpg you are very fortunate! My best around town has been 21 ish-have not had the opportunity to get her out on the highway!

H-E-Double hockey sticks, boy. I can get that with my GT! In the mountains, no less. I would have thought that there might have been a better return, fuel economy-wise, for giving up two cylinders.

How fast were you going on the highway? Most manufactures make try and minimize the aero to about 70 but anything more than that you will really start hurting your milage.

Back in the day my '87 5.0 coupe would knock down 30mpg without a problem on the highway, of course she only weighed in at about 3000 lbs wet also had the highway gear, which helped!

I have been told that using the cruise will eat more gas as your engine boggs down on declines, so I never use the cruise.

Right now I have 6500 miles on my car and I am averaging 23.9 miles per gallon right now.
That is with 75% in town driving.

I did at one time get 28 miles per gallon, but that was right after I got the car and took in on a little trip.

Inclines! The cruise should work very well at keeping good gas mpg.
Sometime on inclines if you don't downshift (or with auto it doesn't), the mpg will decrease.
Overall, cruise control should INCREASE your mpg!

I average only about 21 mpg doing a mix of city and highway, so i'd say that is pretty good. I have once gotten 30.5 mpg on a full tank, but that was driving about 55-60 mph the whole way to the keys. I do have a lead foot though, so that doesn't help much.

I`m doing a couple mph over speed limit on cruise and in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Nebraska it was 75 so maybe thats the problem. I should try holding it to an even 70 maybe I`d get 30mpg. Interstate hiway driving in the mountains doesn`t hurt this cars cruise control at all, if it bogs a bit the trans downshifts right away to compensate. This is one of the best cars I`ve ever taken on a road trip.

My meaning on the declines (down hill) (to keep the car at set speed) is that it will slow the car down by bogging/choking the engine. The engine works harder in doing this thuse using more gas.
I know I'm not using the right wording on this, but hopefully you get my drift on it.
OK I am mesing it all up now so I will quit.

Okay, I understand. The engine doesn't use more gas, it kind of idles. If the decline is really steep it will engine brake ( meaning it will tend to slow the car to engine speed with no additional gas used). That is what happens. It uses no more gas in modern cars, but it saves brake pads in all cars. Cruise control saves gas overall in most cases. I you spend all your times maximizing your gas mileage, you will find that 90% of the time you will be doing exactly what the cruise would do.
GAS MILEAGE RULES
1. No fast starts (I can't do that)
2. Never go over 60 ( yeah right).
3. Coast to stops for as long as possible (so everyone can pass you).
These rules work, but I don't use them.

Ah ok I get your meaning.
I was told that using the cruise would eat more gas, so I never used it.
I guess the same would hold true to the traction control then also?

I guess my 23.9 will be the best I get milage wise as I cannot go by those three rules

Traction control is never activated unless the car senses excessive wheel spin. I can spin rubber in 2nd for quite a few feet without it ever kicking in.
In snow or heavy rain they say it works well ( I wouldn't know).

My V-6 has 9000 miles on it and averages 27-27.5 mpg onthe interstate at 75 mph. At 60 mph I can get up to 29 or 29.5.
I think the manual trans it good for 2-3 more mpg as it doesn't eat up as much HP as the automatic. While I'd like the little bit of extra performance and another couple of mpg, I would miss the convenience of in town driving with the auto trans.

V6 and his auto tranny when driving in city 40% and 60 % highway is at about 21-22 mpg....
When I am driving only on highway (at 75-80 mph) my ride is at 26- 27 mpg!
If I want an agressive drive, and play "music" with my new JBA exhaust, the V6 goes thirsty to 16 mpg !!!!

I have just under 9K miles on mine, manual transmission. I average 28.8mpg. I use cruise a lot, set it at 70. My best is 30.1mpg. That required shifting under 2500, and not going over 70mph.

I don't see how you guys are getting 14??? Unless you're just doing tons of burnouts and zipping around at 100mph, how are you getting such poor mileage? I don't think I've ever got less than 25mpg...

Our '06 v6 with manual now has just over 20k miles on it..

We are averaging between 24mpg and 25mpg consistantly..

thats about 50% highway (or two lane) and 50% city..

speed limit here is 75 so freeway speed is 75-80mph..

When we have a little fun with it we can get the mileage to drop to 22 or 23....

We got 27mpg on a trip from Tucson to Pheonix Az and back which was about 250 or so miles (all freeway @ 70-82mph)

We are still using the dealer to do our oil changes and they are done every 3k miles (they are free until 48k miles).

I did a trip from Boston to Kansas City and back last summer. Averaged 28.7 for the highway parts of the trip.

This was in a 'vert with the top down the whole way, averaging probaby 70mph
