Anyone else had problems with a rattle in the Hurst shifter? I have continually had to retighten the bolts. If anyone has a solution for it, I would greatly appreciate it.

I put a nut on the bolts that are holding the stick on today and didn't get any rattles, so maybe it's fixed.

Like Loctite? I did use that on both bolts and still got some rattle.

 

Put a piece of plumber's mat between the shifter handle and the shift arm. I am using a Hurst handle on a Pro 5.0 and did both and the NVH went away.

You can pick up a piece of the matt from Lowe's 1/8 inch thick for about a buck-

 

I'll have to give that a try if the dreaded rattle comes back. Thanks!

Yep - still do. I just live with it. The benefits of the Hurst far outweigh the cons as far as I'm concerned.

 

Mine actually is at very low RPMs accelerating in 1-4. I haven't really tried it in fifth.

I can live with the rattle, I just prefer it not be there of course. I agree with Dave, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I would still recommend it to anyone who is looking to get a shifter.

i have not had any issues with mine.... works great, no additional noises to be heard

 

maybe we should coin it the "hurst rattler" put that on the super snake....

 

Mine doesn't rattle, but even with the thread locker it ends up with play in the shifter lever arm. I think part of the problem is the bolts supplied being an allen head type, you can't get them tight enough.

I am getting some hex head bolts from work and loctite those it nice and tight, hopefully that will do it once and for all.

I have had rattling since i installed it at certain RPMs. I put thread locker on the jam nut and shift ball, but it hasnt fixed the problem. I also tightened up the bolts on the handle. I'm thinking I might try and remove the shift stops and see if thats it, but it sounds like its coming from the shift ball. I dont know how to get it to stop...

 

Tip: Get some lithium grease and lube the area where the lower stick attaches to the base on the actual bearing. Should solve the problem . Def use the blue loctite on the stick connections though

 

I went through all sorts of fun with my Hurst. Always got noise no matter how tight the hardware was.

We're talking 460 grams (a shade over a full pound) of machined stainless shift ****. This changed the mass of the stick assembly and killed any transmitted noise. Did you ever wonder why the factory stick has a huge blob of steel about halfway up (under the boot)? That's why...

 

There must have been quality issues based on the number of posters complaining of rattles and the handle coming loose.

But there are others like me, who have had their Hurst shifters for almost two years and never had any rattle at all... I used the original allen wrench bolts with Permatex Threadlocker Blue (medium strength), and didn't need to overtighten the bolts at all. The handle has never come loose and there is no slop at all, even after two years.

 

it might be the stick against the base or the shift stops - i might take them out. Its very hard to locate the sound, i thought it was the shift ball but that thing is on tight.

 

I just remembered something. In the past I took the shift ball off and it had stoped rattling. So it is the threads from the shifter stick and the ball rattling. I tried blue locktite but it is still rattling. Im going to get some thread tape and see if that works....

 

holy cow that more than half the price i paid for my shifter!!!

 

I believe there is a steel or brass insert that is cored into the ball. Maybe that's where the vibration is coming from?
