Motive vs. Ford Racing Gears?
Motive vs. Ford Racing Gears?
I'm ready to do the 3.73 gear change in the vert, but need to know what you folks think of the Motive gears vs. Ford Racing gears? The Ford Racing gears are $50 more, but I've heard Motive's are more prone to whine. What would you do?
Gear whine is a result of improper installation, not so much manufacturing defects. Make sure an experienced mechanic installs the gears to factory specs and you will be ok with the Motive gears.
Remember, a bad install will make even Ford Racing gears whine.

Motive is the mfr. of the FRPP gears
FRPP uses Motive as the manufacturer of their 7.5" 3.73 gears. I have them installed and they are fine. I purchased the FRPP gears from a reputable FRPP dealer and inside the box was a paper insert from Motive. I called the dealer and got the info on this. I run a detroit true trac axle.
If you absolutely must have gears that have the Ford oval stamped in them, you can buy the 3.73 7.5" set from any Ford dealer that is usually installed in the ranger pickups. I closely examed my stock OEM 3.31 gears and the motive / FRPP 3.73 gears and I could not find any manufacturing differences (other than the difference in ratio). I don't think spending the extra $$$ to get 3.73 OEM Ford gears versus the less expensive FRPP gears would make any difference. Installation is the key. What kind of axle are you going to run?
Your not going go through the bother of rebuilding your rear-end and installing those new gears on the OEM open differential, are you?
Eric.

Richmond 4:10 Gears
I have been running Richmond 4:10 gears for about a year. They were installed by a local NASCAR shop and so far they've been problem free. The gears, along with some other mods, put me in the running with many stock V8's.
