I think a good situation would be going in with $2000 down and a 700 or higher score. You need a good size down payment for leverage and I think $2000 gives you plenty of room.
Example: Lets say your new Stang is $21,500 with a 5.9 APR. If you put down $2000, your payments will be $376.08 a month.
Here is a payment estimator for you: http://www.defenselink.mil/mapsite/carpay.html

Take a look at the FAQ for more details on X-Plan. It's a Ford pricing structure available to employees. Some employees make their X-Plans available to others. The prices are fixed, so no need to negotiate.
I plan on paying cash - been saving for a while.

When I bought my truck, MSRP was 20,890. I bought it at 17,900 and right now I pay 239 a month for 6 years. That was with a 4k downpayment.
Soon, I'll be buying a stang but havn't decided on what I want. I'd love to have a GT Prem. but I can't really afford the 23k I'm likely to pay for her. I might just downsize to the v6, it's still super fine looking, and fast as heck. Then just slap a blower on her when I get the cash and I can get the 305+ hp that the GT has.
I might buy a somewhat used car. Like the dealer promotion cars that they let people take home and drive. Usually they have like 3-5k miles on it and price is bumped a good tad...
Edit: the APR on my truck is 3.99 and I qualify for 0% from Ford for 1 or 2 years. So I'd have the 0% then refinance it with the 3.99 I can get anytimes I choose...
