So, I'm scheduled to have gears and a t-lok installed on Tuesday (dropping the car off Monday). The shop called today and said they just got a good deal on an Auburn differential and wanted to talk to me about installing that instead of the t-lok.

I called back but they were already closed for the weekend.

So, what's an Auburn differential?

How does it compare to the Ford Racing t-lok?

Or the Detroit Tru-Trac?

Do you think they're just trying to dump a part of on me?

How much do the Auburn differentials go for?

I don't know what the price difference will be yet.

Looking for your guidance... is this a better move than the t-lok?!

Many thanks!!

Hi Hamid,
Here is the company web site:
http://www.auburngear.com/
http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarket/prod.../differentials/
and it appears that it is a type of limited slip using a cone clutch. It looks like it fits between a factory limited slip and a TrueTrac. Probably not too bad, but it would be nice to find someone who has one already to get their impression of it.
Personally, I'm still 100% satisfied with my TrueTrac.
Brian.

It's stronger than a T-Lok, not as strong as a TrueTrac.

I did a little more research... seems they need to be rebuilt every 40,000 miles or so. This is still my daily driver and am concerned about little things like turning (don't need a tire squeeking... I know some lockers do this).

Well, if it does fall between the t-lok and TrueTrac in strength, that would probably be just fine.

I'd love to hear from someone that actually has it installed. Hanging out on these boards, I've only seen the Auburn mentioned in passing.

The typical Limited Slip Clutches work pretty well for the first 30,000 miles, and then diminish in effectivity. For example, my F350 truck with 128,000 miles has very little torque transfer left.
A TrueTrac never wears out.

$400!!!! darn, that sucks! They are as easy to install as a T-LOK, so I don't know why they are quoting you that much.

I have a TT as well, 1,000 miles on it, nice and broke in.... Smoking tires for 500 miles now.... But only on special occasions...

Ya, its the same to install a Tlok, and they are quoting me the same lol. I have my own shop, but i dont do rearend work, so i dont have the right tools to set pinion depth and everything and i dont want to screw things up guessing.

EDIT: so how much was yours installed?

Well, it was done with a whole bunch of other work as well, but if I had to estimate, $300 to install the gears and TT.

Id be happy to pay $300 for an install. Thats under $700 total for the TT installed.

Im really curious what this v6 can do with simple boltons, posi, and a little bigger street tire (going to 235s next, then maybe some 265s in the future). I dont think a 14.3 is out of the question then.

all righty... I'm calling the shop first thing tomorrow. I'll see what kind of deal they'll give me and decide from there. Either way... I'm getting a LSD and won't be spinnin' one tire anymore!

I think TT is the way to go just because you wont have to rebuild it

I absolutely love the TrueTrac and it works great! I have about 2,500 miles on it so far. My costs are as follows:
TrueTrac = $525 (I didn't try to get any special pricing on this, so I think this is an upper bound on the basic unit)
Carrier bearings = $30 (my mechanic's puller was too big for the relatively small differential, so we just put a new set on it).
Labor = $163 (2.5 hours at $65 per hour)
Gear oil = $38 (2 quarts at $19 per quart)
total without state sales tax = $756
I have other comments about my TrueTrac here:

Your TT WAS expensive but your labor cost can't be beat! So it all evened out or put you slightly ahead...

I dropped the car off today... really nice shop! Talked to everyone involved for quite awhile. They have some lovely rides in there, including a recent model Cobra with a lovely exhaust note. The shop owner showed me his 700+ hp 65 Mustang... says it's in the 9's...ahhh... nice!

So, I decided to go with the Auburn over the t-lok. Only $80 more. If it goes bad, I may go with a TrueTrac in the future. Since I was quite happy with the idea of a t-lok to begin with, I think I'll be very happy with the Auburn.

They've only worked on one other 05 V6. They ordered a procharger for the guy, but then he disappeared. They said, if he doesn't show up, they'll sell it to me for a really good deal, far under internet pricing. hmm... have to give that one some thought. I'd prefer to stay n/a.

Anyway.. I get the car back tomorrow. I'll post my thoughts, plus dyno numbers. Maybe even a viddy of the dyno session.

Fazm, just informationally my install of a t-lok and gears was $300.

Hamid, That sounds great. Let us know how everything goes and definately post your numbers. I'm getting mine dyno'd tomorrow and it will be interesting to see how we compare. As far as I know the only real difference is your duals and differential, right? What gears are you getting?
