Will this work on 17" premium rims?
Hello,
Local deal I am looking at for $150. 6k miles of use, 85% thread left????
I would install on 17" premium rims.
275/40/R17 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials

Seems to wide to me. It has been pretty much accepted that 255's is as wide as you can "safely" go with. I am running 275's Nitto's on 9.5 wide rims and that looks right.

For those purposes, you should be OK. I'd say they're too wide for normal street driving, but I've seen those tires on stock wheels lots of times. Heck, that's the combo of choice at Brenspeed for budget racing. Check it out here:

FWIW, a lot of guys run the 275/40 on an 8" wheel, but they fit better on a 9". The best DR I know for the 17x8 is the 275/50-15 M&H. They aren't a true 275 (8.8" tread width), so they work great on an 8" wheel. BUT... they are 28" tall, so you probably want 4.10s back there.
And for the record, I call on the above. After 6k miles, you'd be lucky to have 40% tread left, and that's only if they never had any burnouts.
