Who's Gears?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Hey all!

OK, it's Wednesday night, just finished installing my first set of mods, and I need more! Unless someone has a better suggestion, I'm goin for gears next. So here's my questions:

1. I've read somewhere that FRPP gears are the only way to go, that Motive have been known to have issues. Anyone have any insight on this?

2. Got a quote from a local shop for installation, 450.00 for labor. That sound right?

3. My car came with 3.31s stock, guy at the shop is telling me 3.73s would be sufficient since it is a semi-daily driver, but I am looking towards 4.10s, any reason I shouldn't go with the 4.10s?

Any feedback would be apreciated, looking to get them as soon as possible, and the shop I'm looking at is booked until the end of Feb/early March.

Thanks!!!!

I got mine from the Ford Dealership parts counter along with a list of parts my installer told me I needed. I'm happy with the 4.10's in my manual, but I am not SC, and probably won't be for the next year or two. I hear 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10 all the time, but wouldn't the 3.90's be a good alternative for someone unsure of going all the way to 4.10's.

Only install Ford Racing gears. I have 4.10s and love them with the manual trans- no regrets. My local shop charges around $300 for labor.

I'm pretty confident in the 4.10s. Just wanted some input after the shop suggested 3.73s and not 4.10s. As for the 3.90s, I didn't think FRPP had that ratio available.

I agree 4:10s are fine on a daily driver, mine is a manual and the only real adjustment I've made in my driving habits is I shift into 4th and 5th earlier when I'm driving, with the added torque it doesn't lug the motor at all.

I stand corrected no 3.90's in ford racing parts catalog.

What is the difference in the designation of the 4.10 parts numbers M-4209-G410A or M-4209-G410M? The catalog doesn't state the difference that i can see.

supposedly, you only want the ones ending in A not M. the ones that end in M are made by Motive and some people say they have a lot of noise etc.

I am the odd one of the bunch and went with Motive 390s- Everyone swore that they would whine like a baby, but there is nothing...And I definitely LOVE them!

What is the difference between the 4.10s and the 3.73s? I have to drive to St. Augustine from where I live a few times a year to visit family, so I need something that works well on the highways, as well as around town. I don't really need tooth loosening hole shots or anything, but bit of quickness never hurt anybody, right?

The 4:10's really aren't that bad. I noticed a difference of 700rpms going from 3:55's to 4:10's. For how much more fun it made the car definently worth it.

Don't quote me on this, but from what I have heard there is only a couple hundred RPM difference at 70 MPH. The O/D gear helps that out. If I was doing it I would go FRPP 4.10s and go with the ones ending in A due to the M being Motive made. The labor sounds a touch high, but not outrageous. The install is just as important as the gears themselves. Be sure the shop has good references on gear installs. My local performance shop does it for $250 if you have the gears and the shim kit. Good Luck!!!

The shop has a good reputation, I did alot of research before even deciding to request a quote. They say things are bigger in Texas, I guess thing are more expensive in New Jersey... Thanks for the info Terry.

I have 4.10s now but I'm going to switch to 3.73s for the possibillity of a turbo install. I have a 125 shot of nitrous now and as soon as you hit the throttle your shifting from 1st to 2nd. You may want to contact the guys a www.teamjdm.com up there in your area.
