Thumbs up

Previous new cars I did the first oil change at either 3,000 or 5,000 whatever the book suggested but what are the thoughts on the first change?

When did you do it and is it really necessary after say 200-500 miles?

Thanks Scott.

I did mine at 1,000 - switched to synthetic. I then changed at 5,000 and every 5000 after that. I also change a filter between changes- at 7500, 12500 etc...

I'll probably change mine at 3000 with a synthetic blend (not quite sure yet). Then I'll change it every 5000 miles.

Did mine at 1,000, always hgave, never had a problem wtih an engine on a car. Seems liek cheap insurance to me JUST in case theres any metal shavings, etc.

I would change it after the first 1000, and then again after another 2000 (at 3000 miles). That way you can change it every 3000 after that and will be changing it in intervals of 3000 so you always know when it's time.

My first change was after only 450 miles...why not, it was less than $20 at the dealership. Replaced w/ std. motorcraft 5w-20. Next oil change at 3,500 (now), plan to go w/ Mobil 1 synth. 5W-20. Buy it by the case at Sam's (don't remember the price). Prolly every 5K+ after the synthetic is in.

I did mine at 950 miles simply because it was at the dealer( again ) anyway, and it was free. So I figured why not. Will probably do the 2nd one at 3k, then every 3k afterward.

Yeah, if I DO switch over to full synthetic, I'll change it every 5k. For now with the synthetic blend, it's every 3k.

I've been having a dilemna as well...I've heard that some guys change after 20 miles. I've also heard that you don't want to change too soon because you need a little wear during break in. I just clocked 1500km yesterday, and I'm not sure if I will wait till the first service at 5000km or get them to change it sooner....metal shavings anyone??? It's my first Mustang, my first brand new car, so I want to do it right!

That seems a bit silly to me. Seriously, most people giving breakin advice like that are thinking of old motors. I fail to believe that having crap in your oil wearing your motor has any benefit on breakin.

My first one was at 2200 miles Motorcraft blend, now at 5000 I will be switching to Mobil 1 and I will do it every 4-5000 miles from now on. What filters are you guys (and gals) using? Mobil1 has one and K&N has one that looks to be good too. Just wondering  who makes the best filter too.

If you're worried about metal shavings (ferrous metals anyway) pick up one of these.

If you think about it a little... the "break-in" that will cause shavings in would most likely occur pretty rapidly as the rings clear the burrs in the cylinders. During this time I assume that the burrs would be removed and the rings / cylinder walls would mate up fairly well. I ran mine like I stole it as soon as I left the dealer. It had less than 5 miles on it when I left, and add to that the 30 miles to my home. I dropped the oil when I got home and put another synth blend in. At 500 I then chaged again but to a full synth. Another change at 2K, 5K and one coming at 8K. I guess I am sticking to the 3K schedule out of habit.

Mobil1, K&N, Purolator Pure 1, or Motorcraft (Which has the same innards as the Pure 1) are the best from what I've heard.
