What is your Opinion on The "BEST" Shifter for S197 Mustang GT?

So I did a little searching and couldn't come up w/ much... What brought me to this is I was at the track last week and notice My Steeda Triax giving me quite a bit of trouble and I wanted to know if there was a better shifter on the market???

I have no complaints about MGW either...I love their shifter. I haven't tried any of the other brands though.

I've read all the different opinions on all the different shifters and it astounds me that some of them have been described as 'notchy'. Now, the way these operate is strictly a ball-type mechanism that allows the shift handle to control the linkage in the transmission. That means if the shifter is notchy, it's IN the transmission, not the shifter itself.

With that being said, I have the Roush billet and have enjoyed it very much for the past 4 years. Based on what I've seen, the MGW is the way to go if you want any kind of adjustability. As far as I know, all of them mount is the same manner as the stock shifter, which means you still have to account for the difference in twist between the engine and body. Being as a short throw takes more effort, if that was a problem with the stock shifter, it will be worse with a short throw. Until someone designs a shifter that is fully mounted on the trans, that problem won't be completely solved.

I agree completely. However something to think about, go take a look at pictures of the MGW. The MGW is designed with the remote mounted design shifter in mind and the fact that the shifter is bolted to the body which creates an issue when the transmission and motor are torquing over. The rods in the rear do allow some movement. I'm running the CHE K Member Brace with Torque Limiters (Street Version) with my MGW and can powershift without any issue. I'd highly recommend both together.

MGW for the win! Very adjustable and no 3rd gear lockout. Looks like a work of art.

Pro 5.0 is too notchy and loud operation with lots of added NVH. Also had 3rd gear lockout at WOT.

Hurst was too stiff, too short shift, and also had 3rd gear lockout.

Thanks guys for all the input; You have really helped me out and I guess what I am thinking of doing is going w/ some Torque limiters and a k-member brace along w/ the MGW shifter...
But I want to ask: How does the shifter hold up on the track? The whole reason I am going thru this process is b/c the shifter I had didn't hold up the way I would expect... I want a shifter to perform on the Track!

Anybody know if I can get a discount?

There's thread on here by MGW and the newest version has already been reduced. I was on the original pre-order list and I don't remember the discounted price we got then but it seems like it was about the same as the new price. As far as performing on the track I have no experience , but I can say it's one of the best made shifters I've ever seen and I can see no reason it shouldn't hold up ...

I have the Hurst Billet and couldn't be happier. I greased the spherical bearing heavily and I have no vibrations issues at all. It's quiet and shifts great. I installed it a few months ago and its finally starting to break in nicely and shift smother. Plus it looks awesome. I think only the bad press on the Hust make it on this web site, I think when people are content with it, like me, they don't post anything. The Hurst billet is a qualty piece and I'm very pleased.

I ran the MGW in my S197 and will be installing on in my SN95 now. Never had a problem and they really back their product up.

I had a Hurst Competition shifter (old style) and it was a flaming pile of crap. They lost their shot at me buying anything else from them again. The new billet shifter may be awesome, but I'll never know.

I too haven't experienced issues with the Hurst. I even have the original, I don't know what people refer to when they bash on it. Mine has been nothing but excellent. I love the "notchiness" of it, and it looks cooler than anything else on the car. I've gotten more compliments on the shifter than probably anything else on the car.

I've ran the car at the track and never experienced 3rd gear lockout either. I did miss 4th gear once, but that's a story for another day...

Drive a couple, that's the only way you'll fine what you like. Shifters are like women people like different things. I've never had any issues with my Pro 5.0, it isn't as tight as it was when I first bought it but know how to resolve that issue (just takes a little time to drop the shifter). Some people want the "notch," if I wanted it to feel like a stock shifter I would keep my stock shifter. I think the MGW is a nice shifter, my only complaint is how they attach their handles. I like to change things up and they don't really have an inexpensive option to do that with the way it attaches. Maybe I change things to much though?

They do sell a 3/8-16 handle that will mount most shifter handles.
