What slick are you using?

Ok guys let do a quick poll here what is everyone doing for slicks?

What brand and model?
Why that one?
What are you getting for a 60' time with them?

Anything else, are you using a different wheel if so which one? What else?

I'm not using any slicks now, but a few years ago when I was still drag racing (total chassis car, not a s197) we always had great luck with the Mickey Thompson's. They required a very small burnout, and lasted a long time.

I've been running Mickey Thompson 28x10.50-15 slicks (#3055) since last fall. Why? several reasons:

1. M/T makes a good tire at a fair price.
2. My wheels are 15x9, so 10.5 is about as wide as I want to go.
3. I'm running 4.10s, so I need a minumum 28" dia. And I'd probably have fenderwell clearance issues with a 29" or larger.
4. They hook better, weigh less (23# vs 33#), and last a lot longer than my drag radials did. I got under a 100 runs from the DRs, but I've averaged 220 runs on my first two sets of the slicks.

My best 60-foot to date has been 1.52, and recently the car has been lifting the left front tire on the launch. But my average 60-foot is usually in the high 1.5 - low 1.6 range. I expect that to improve when the weather get better.

Oh, and FWIW, I run the 325/45-17 M&H Racemaster DRs on the street. I love them as a street tire, but I've never used them at the track. Paul (psfracer) has used them at the track, and has had excellent results.

Thanks for the info Don, I never thought about the wear difference. That's huge!

What size wheel are you using with the 325's?

I'm running them on a 17x9, and they fit perfect.

I use the M&H Racemaster 325/45/17's drag radials which are DOT legal. Not a true slick but my best 60' time is a 1.502.

I use the 325 M&H because:
1) it fits on a 17X9 rim---couldn't find a 17X10 rim with the correct offset for a s197
2) I needed a 28 tall tire because I have 4.10s
3) A 28 tall tire also has more sidewall, so it hooks better (then the m/t 275/40/17)
4) Unless your car is slamed, the m/t 275/40/17 looks gay on our cars, way to short and you can drive a train through the fenderwell gap
5) I am too lazy to switch tires, so I use these on the street and just drive to the track, switch tunes, ice down, and race.

6.95 @ Irwindale with 13psi, now I am at 16 psi and trying to make it back out to Irwindale to see the difference.

Paul;

Thank you....I'm leaning heavily towards the Racemasters right now.
It's looking like these are the best option for me right now.
Where did you get them? I see RPMOUTLET has them but kind of leery buying from them after all the other post I've seen.

Also how are they holding up?

I am in the market for a pair of Drag Radials and am wondering which is best suited for me so I appreciate any and all opinions. I plan to mount them on stock 17x8 bullit rims. My 05 Mustang GT Auto. trans. is stock except for a 9 lb. boost Magnacharger. Hooking up on stock tires has become a problem. I am considering the M&H 275/50R17 Drag Radial with a 28" diameter or the Mickey Thompson 3743R ET Street Radial with a 26" diameter. Is the diameter difference critical for my application and should I run tubes in either of these tires? Which tires would you choose if you were me?

I ordered mine directly from M&H. http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?...on=show_detail Call and talk to John, he ought to be able to beat the website price by 5 or 10%.

Both are good tires, and should fit fine on the 17x8 wheels. Are these for track only? Do you still have 3.31 rear gears? If yes to both, go with the shorter M/T tire, it will help with the launch. But, if you plan on running the DRs as a daily driver street tire, I'd go with the 28" M&H.

And no tubes are needed in radials.

Hey Don, I figured you'd be the man with an incite. Thanks alot. I do still have the stock 3:31. I plan on using the DR's primarily on the strip and the 50 mi. trip to and from the strip. How will the smaller diameter of the M/T's help my launch?

A smaller dia tire has the same effect as going to a numerically higher gear ratio. So replacing a 27.2" tire with a 26" tire will make your 3.31 gears act like 3.46 gears.

Just make sure and keep your Traction Control off when you are running a different size tire. The TC system may not like the different speeds the front and rear tires are spinning.

I have run different size front and rear tires for over two years, and more than 30K miles. TCS doesn't care one bit. And neither does the ABS for that matter.

BTW, always run with TCS off at the track.

Interesting, I would think it would matter. I wonder if it is just not enough of a difference for the system to kick in.

On the street, I've had 27" fronts and 28" rears since May 2005. At the track, I run 26" fronts and 28" rears.

Yesterday I decided I would go with the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial [3743R]. I went down to my local tire store where I usually purchase my tires and when he went to order them from his supplier he was told that particular tire was on national backorder and to check back in a month. Since I have a track day scheduled for 9/18 I did not want to wait that long. I called Mickey Thompson customer service and was told the same thing. I started panicking and did some internet searching and found what I thought was the best price to be Jegs. I called over there and was told that they did indeed have them in stock and would deliver them tomorrow. I thought "ya right it's already 4:00 pm.". Well, today at 11:00 am.they were delivered to my doorstep by Fed Ex. Now that's what I call "Great Service". By 1:00 pm. they were mounted and balanced on my spare set of Bullits and ready for Burn Outs. Can't Beat That!!!
