What Oil Brand And Type

I have close to 2000 miles on my GT now and I am getting ready to do oil change. I was wondering when I should switch to synthetic oil or if I should even go that route or stay with dino oil. Also I would like to get some advice on the best brand name synthetic and dino oils. As far as oil filters I guess the Motorcraft is OK? All advice is appreciated.

You’re going to get a variety of responses on this question, but I prefer dino oil or the factory blend until about 3k miles, and then going with a full synthetic. If you like to trade every few years, I’d just use the recommended 5W-20 Motorcraft oil, providing you can find it at a reasonable price. Either way I wouldn’t use oil with a greater viscosity than 5W-20. I also believe the Motorcraft filters are excellent filters.

i just changed mine
i used the motocraft 5-20 synthetic blend
it was 2.35 a quart

At 1000 I went with the motorcraft 5W20 blended synthetic, with a motorcraft filter. I plan to do another change at around 3000 with the same supplies, then around 5000 switch to Mobil 1 5W20.

B) Been using the Mobil1 5-20 for years. I change initial oil at 2-3000 with Dino make change to the synthetic when I hit 5K. Then I change at 5-7K intervals.

I'm not sure how you've been using 5W-20 for years since it's new. Previously they advertised 0W-20 as equivalent to 5W-20. They had 5W-30 as well, but the 5W-20 weight is new to the Mobil 1 product line.

Thanks for all the info.I believe I will go to synthetic after about 5000 miles. Seems like everyone I talked to likes the Motorcraft filter. I don't think that Fram is a very good filter anymore.

Hmmmmm. Just turned 180,000 on my 52 month old daily driver. Maybe it is 0W-20; will have to see if I have any recent receipt records. I've used the 30 weight on previous vehicles. Got me curious

I've always used Mobil 1, but will stick with the Ford oil most likely.
As the years pass, and after trying non-factory parts on cars, I seem to have more and more confidence in the guys who engineer these cars and in the parts they originally intended you to use.
I doubt many will go wrong with Mobil 1 though. Stock oil and filter for me for the first while though.

When you are getting ready for synthetic you should probably go with mobil 1 0w20. The reason I say this, is because recently a magazine or something (i cant remember where I saw it) did a comparison between the 5w30 and 0w20 mobil 1, and apparently the 0w20 was completely better across the board because apparently it's a newer formula/addictive package that isn't yet available in 5w30.
Edit: I didn't even realize Mobil 1 had 5w20 now It also looks like they no longer have 0w20 on their webpage? Perhaps they swapped them or even just changed the name.

I also read that the 0-20 full syn. Mobil 1 flowed better than regular or blended 5-20, that's why they (Mobil) recommended it to replace the 5-20 in Honda and Ford vehicles. I am curious to see the difference between their 0-20 and their 5-20.

I just stopped at my local AUTOZONE store, picked up 6 quarts of the new MOBIL 1, 5W-20 (just came in), changed the OIL and Filter at 2000 miles..
$31.47 a case(6) in NY.

I mean, I know it's cheap insurance for your engine, relatively speaking, but Walmart has the 5 QT jugs of Mobil 1 10W-30 usually for less than $20.
Anyone see the Mobil 1 5W-20 cheaper than this price, or see it in a 5 qt container?

It's not as bad as you think. If you buy the 5 qt jug you would still need to buy one more quote for an oil change. Assuming you could get 1 qt at the same price per quart as the jug ($4), you're talking $24 for the oil plus you still need a filter. The FL820S runs about $3-4 (I think?) at Walmart so you're looking at $27-28 for an oil change. That's onlya $3-4 dollar difference from what he paid and he used the correct weight and specification of oil for the '05 Mustang. Walmart is supposed to start stocking the 5W20 so it'll probably end up being around the same price as the 10W30.
