This one design was meant to spawn many different engines of radically different displacement and cylinder count. Hence, it was "modular' in the sense that this one design could spawn many very different motors.

There were supposed to be V-6 motors built off of the modular architecture, and much smaller V-8's than we ever actually got as well. Some of the V-8's were even rumoured to be below 4.0L! Only the 4.6L V-8, 5.4L V-10, and 6.8L V-10 ever happened though.

I often wonder why the V-6 program stopped as it made more sense than did the V-10 program to me. 90-degrees is not the optimum angle for a six-cylinder, but Mercedes 90-degree V-6's work great, and the 3-valve design lends itself to great torque even in the V-6. This would have made a fine replacement for the 3.8L and the 4.0L IMHO.

But now, we have the new Cyclone V-6 coming to fill the "big V-6" requirement. And, maybe even the V-10 getting replaced with the upcoming Hurricane.

Truth be told though, this motor was designed as a V-8 first and it shows.

not to bust your rocks, brutha, but the 5.4 is a V-8..... you've got it listed as a V-10
