I have used Mobil 1, Lucas, and Royal Purple. I tend to use the RP in the summer when it gets hot.

Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-20 in both our cars - my 05GT and wife's 01 Escape (with 123K on the clock) and an FL820S filter.

Mobil 1 5W-20 and the Motorcraft FL-820S filter.

In my '95 GT, I switched to Mobil 1 ATF for the 5-speed transmission, and there was a very noticeable improvement in ease of shifting (and just getting the shifter into 1st and reverse), especially in cold weather.

Go synthetic everywhere you can!

Redline, Royal purple, Mobil One , and the new Motorcraft 5W20 full synthetic, all of these are very good.
Find one that fits your budget, and your availability and stick with it.

'07 Gt/CS VERT - Mobil one 5w20 or 0W20 if available.
'08 Sport Trac 4.6 - Royal Purple 5W20
'03 Mazda Protege - Mobil one 10w30 high mileage and Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer booster

But remember, I distribute the above mentioned products for a living.

Car Talk (with Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers) on NPR this morning talked about this very topic! Actually, the question was, if Mobil 1 is not available, would there be any problems or noticeable difference if using another oil?

Click and Clack's answer was as long as the substitute oil is another full synthetic, then it would not harm the engine at all, and it would afford the same protection. They said using Castrol Syntec would be a good example - it will provide as much protection and performance benefit as using Mobil 1.

They used the analogy of ordering a Coke in a restaurant, and getting a Pepsi instead - even though they are not the same, they both do essentially the same thing, and the Pepsi will rot your teeth just as fast as the Coke.
