Went to the Track Tonight, Question About Future Mods...

This was my best, and final, run of the night. The track wasn't too crowded, so I got to make about 7 runs. It was ~65 degrees when I first got there, and ~55 as it got darker. I haven't been to the track since I sold my 5.0 seven years ago. Tire pressure was 32f/25r since I didn't want to stray too far from how I run on the street. I also had the spare/jack in the trunk and a little less than half a tank of gas.

R/T - .725
60' - 2.043
330 - 5.831
1/8 - 8.906
MPH - 81.16
1000 - 11.521
1/4 - 13.726
MPH - 103.01

The car is a 5-speed with ~4,700 miles, 4.10 gears, 18" factory Bullitts, SLP Loud Mouths, Steeda shifter, SCT 93 octane tune, and CDC Shaker w/ stock air box. I got off the line pretty good launching at ~2k rpm, but there was a good bit of wheelspin going into 2nd and 3rd gears. My birthday is coming up, so my fiancee has given me a budget of ~$300-$400 for a present. Given the info. above, would the better bang for the buck be: C&L intake or underdrive pulleys & upper control arm or upper and lower control arms? Any help is much appreciated.

You could look into the JLT intake, it is signifigantly cheaper than the C&L, that should add at least 20HP and help signifigantly.

Yeah, good point. At $199 the JLT is looking really good.

Agree with the JLT Idea, however he is not going to gain 20hp with it though. He already has a 93 octane tune. Who is your tune from?

Dear Sean,

I'm thinking your 4.10s and the wheel spin is your first issue to address. I have the C&L Racer intake and 93 Octane Tune, but I'm running the 3.55s. I don't have too much spin going into 2nd and I hook great in 3rd. I don't know specifics on your wheel/tire combo, but it seems your tire pressure is a bit low. I read an article in MM&FF talking about old school rules for tire pressure don't apply to the S197s. I run 36lb F/R on BFGoodRich KDWSs. My car is not meant for the strip, but I'm thinking with a little better reaction time and the proper traction you should be in the 13.20 range.

The tune was done by a local shop, Excessive Motorsports. If I get the intake, I'll probably take the ride up to Tillman or another more well-known shop for a tune.

Yeah, the 4.10s definately cause some excessive wheelspin on the stock BFGs. Not to mention that I lost a little time from having to shift to 4th at the top end. So I'm torn between addressing the traction issue or getting a little more power from an intake. Regarding the reaction time, I was under the impression that the clock doesn't start until you cross the start line.

Yeah, reaction time has nothing to do with e/t. Actually, if you want to help your e/t out, you can try to stage as shallow as possible. Just barely break the second set of beams. That way you are already rolling a little when your wheels go past the beam. Back in the day when I was still racing a few years ago that trick alone netted me .2 seconds vs. deep staging.

Traction, thats what you need, not more power right now. BTW what track and what altitude as well as what race weight (the reason I ask is because my car @ 3650 lbs, about 80 deg, and 100 feet above sea level, bone stock is capable of running 13.6's when it hooks right).

I can't wait to see what my GT runs up at Bandimere's.The altitude is prolly around 6000ft so I'm hoping for a 14.5 or better.

Have you considered a pair of drag slicks for a better hook up? another thing to consider is when your tires spins nothing breaks

I ran at Capitol Raceway in Crofton, MD. The track is 20ft. above sea level, temp was between 55-65 degrees over the course of the evening, and I was running with jack, spare, a little less than 1/2 tank of gas, and me at ~190 lbs. The more I think it over, the more I'm thinking a set of drag radials would be the way to go. I'll just have to pony up the extra cash for a pair of take-off wheels.

If you add DRs with nothing else you will have mad wheelhop. Take care of your suspension and add a CAI. Good luck.

I don't have any suspension mods, and I have never had any wheel hop. With M/T DR's I cut a 1.78 60ft as well.

I agree... wheel hop seems to be hit and miss. Some cars do, some don't. Mine never has had wheel hop, regardless of my power levels... all the way from stock until now.

Oh yea, +1 on the traction. Get some drag radials, and it will be a big difference.

Let us know about the intake. That will significantly help your ET's. We also stock the C&L Racer intakes, as well. I would be able to provide you with a tune on the spot. Feel free to stop by, even if you have any questions at all!!
