I recently installed the Steeda Underdrive pulleys and nowof course, i'm seeing some posts about them causing oil pump and/or altenator failure!!! Am i overly concerned or are these just some random cases?? Has anyone here had either of the two fail because of the UDP?

9,000 miles now with no problems. I think alot of what you read about is cheap pullies that are used on rice cars. I have not seen anyone with 05 Mustang problems.

I heard under drive pulleys kill small animals as well. I always wondered why I keep finding dead animals next to my car in the morning.

I agree the UD pulleys that are not quality is asking for trouble. Go with brand names: Steeda, Roush, possible March.

This stuff is done by the pro's....don't skimp and buy quality.

I'm going to provide you with the same reply, from the same thread you posted on a different forum..I checked with the same technician, that works on my 05gt at my local Ford Dealer, and he confirms that the crank pulley in the 05 Mustangs and up, are not physically attached to the oilpumps, nor are driven by the crank, as were previous Mustangs, prior to 04 and down..So you have nothing to worry about as far as UD pulleys causing any type of damage to the oilpump, However he did also mention that if you're concerned about increased cooling temps or any possible detionation issues, due to the 25% reduction flow, from the UD water pump pully..Then install a 180 degree thermostat, but don't go any lower than that, otherwise, you're A/F ratio could run too rich. especially at WOT, in addition the PCM may also go into safe mode.. Not according to Steeda, after speaking to 2 of their tech support Reps, they checked with one of their techinician's who does most of their custom tunning, and according to the technician, the factory thermostat only begins to open at 180* and when fully open its at 202* and is therefore technically considered as a 192* thermostat

Wow really? I don't question you per se, but Steeda's technical ability. Ford's pdf (posted somewhere on this site I'm sure) lists the thermostat as being a 180*. Interesting interpretation of the thermostat's rating IMO.

I know exactly what you mean, and its very confusing, because Steeda lists the factory stat as 192* however Ford racing performance parts list it as 180* I also checked 2 of my local Ford dealers and spoke with their parts department reps. and they tracked down the Motorcraft part # RT1168 and 2C5Z8575AA is the actual Ford part # thats stamped on the stat itself and here's what I found out.. RT1168 is the stat for 4.6 4v 03-04 Cobra and 4.6 3v 05-06 Mustang GT. which is listed as 180* on the other hand, there is also Motorcraft part # RT1178 which is also Ford part # 3L3Z8575AC listed for 01-04 4.6 2v Mustang GT. rated at 192* I suppose the only way to find out for sure, is take out the stat and determine which Ford part # matches and there should also be either 180* or 192* stamped somewhere either on the top or bottom of the stat itself. Anyway, hope this is bit more helpful. I'm also waiting for a follow up call from a tech support Rep. from Mustangs Unlimited, who will hopefully confirm this, he's also checking with someone that he knows who works in the Ford parts department, at his local dealer.

But reading the warranty article in MM & FF will cause your oil pump to fail. You alternator can only fail if you are reading the article in your car at night.

sorry just had to add some comic relief in here.
