Tuner Woes

I am hoping that someone else has had ...or knows somebody that has experienced the same troubles that I am having.... I own a 2007 Mustang GT with no serious Mods....I purchased an SCT Tuner and 3 Professional Tunes...and a Racer Cold Air System....I installed the 87 Performance Tune....and was totally in Love with my Car!! I had no more Trottle Lag....it sounded Hotter....and shifted hard enough to Bark them Dogs in every Gear....I was Impressed top say the least......I took the Car on a 1500 mile Road Trip.....and as I drove I noticed that it didnt seem to be as tough shifting any more.....and the Trottle seemed to be getting spongy again.....by the time I got to my Vacation Destination....it felt like Stock again.....I called the Tuner.....He told me that these New Cars have way of learning what is different.....and changing it .....and he told me to re-load the Tune and it would be fine.....and it was.....but when I got back Home....I had to re-load it again....and about every Month still I have to re-load it to keep it Fresh and full of Torque.....any Ideas??? I am being snowballed here....or is this really true of an Aftermarket Performance Tune???

MIchael, I have heard of others experiencing this problem. I have never personally had this issue with my 06 5-speed. I also have the Racer with SCT and Tunes from Brenspeed. There has been some chatter on the forums about this specific issue however I know of no solutions.

I got my Tunes from Doug Studdard....Bamatunes......I mean when the Tune is Fresh....She'll tear the Tires off...but as the weeks go by....it goes back to being a Gelded Pony again!!! Mine is an Automatic....I presume that was obvious....I was just hoping that there was a Fix for this that someone has come up with

Michael ! may I suggest you either shoot Doug an e-mail, or give him a phone call ? As I'm certain he'll be able to provide you with both an answer and solution to fixing your tuning issues A.S.A.P...

what most likely hapened is the dealership reflashed the car with a program other than it had, always before taking in put but original and then read what car has when get it back if it's differnt Do not load tune as it will not work Doug talks of this in the do's & don'ts maybe the dealer can put it back, & then why did they do it to begin with ?

You maybe able to read what it has now and then Doug may need to know but don't do it unless he'd give an ok as I'm no expert at all

Michael..I've been using my 93 race tune for well over a year now, and it's definitely not too radical for the street at all..In fact, it's even fine under local traffic conditions as well..I've also been extremely happy with Doug's tunes, and haven't looked back since..Anyway, if you keep e-mailing and calling Doug ? he will get back to you..it's just that he's been extremely busy since going full time and unfortunately, he still hasn't found anyone to help take some of the load off his shoulders yet, as he's still just a one man operation..So just keep hanging in there, and he'll get you all squared away soon..

Yea, The Automatics have a Adaptive Learning feature, and the shift schedule will adjust to your style of driving

Don't ask I know what a stupid feature in a Muscle car..
I though that Dougs tunes turned off this feature? you may want to check with him.

Here is other take on adaptive learning from Justin...
On the 05+ cars WOT A/F learning does occur, there is no way to turn it off, you can only limit it. The way VMP Tunning tunes are set up the car should only learn an a/f correction below 3000RPM at WOT, this way high RPM a/f and power are not effected.

Normally the computer only learns in closed loop (idle and part throttle), at WOT there is no real learning that occurs. However, the computer will take learned a/f from the higher throttle areas where it is still in closed loop, and apply these corrections to the WOT area where it is open loop. This is where you could loose a little bit of bottom end WOT power if the A/F is rich or lean, though it would not hurt anything.

You should not have experienced a loss in gas mileage, unless there is something wrong with your front O2 sensors.

There are many types of learning. Long term learning can be turned off, and short term learning can be left on, to prevent the low rpm changes in wot fueling. However, even this I do not recomend as it can decrease driveability. Learning can be turned off all together and the car can be forced open loop all the time, but I don't recomend this if you want good driveability and mileage.

I have a manual and I loaded my bama 93 race tune back in early June and haven't touched it since. After reading this thread, I reloaded it just to see and I have to say it has a lot more go in the lower RPM range now. I think there's truth to this (I mean.. it can't just be in my head). Has anyone gotten a responce to this question from one of our respected tuners?

Either way I'm glad I know now. I don't mind reloading the tune every now and then.. it doesn't take that long.

I emailed Doug right after I got back from Michigan on my 3500 mile vacation trip to tell Him about what I experienced....here was His reply....and it makes sense ....and it worked

OK.................Doug
I reloaded the 87 Performance.....and we are back to barking in three
gears.....crisp throttle again too......what gives???? Is this something
that I will have to do every so often.....or do you think that seeing as how

I went so far on my Vacation that the Computer reset some things itself????
You got me by the short hairs!!! I know nothing about these new Cars....give

me a dual 4 barreled Blown Big Block Chevy any day!!! But then.....I really
like the 26 miles per gallon I got with this going home!!!

Michael

Hey Mike,

Sounds good, I'm working with SCT about this now. There's a learning
feature in the PCM for the automatic transmission and I'm trying to get them
to find a away to disable it so we can keep the shifts good at all times.

I'll keep you posted as to when I figure this out and for now if you want
to reload the tune say once a month that should keep you going great. It
only takes 1-2 minutes to do.

Sorry for the hassle! Doug.

Hey michael, thanks for sharing that msg!

Wierd though that Doug echoed what 2K05GT said about it being an automatic trans thing. I have a manual and just today experienced better performance when reloading the tune after 2 months.

Anyway, keep us posted if Doug gets back to you with more info.

I think it just may be more pronounced with the auto because the tranny and the engine adapt.

The way Doug put it to me was that the PCM addapts over time to the way the Car is being driven....and alters setttings .....Doug is working with SCT and Ford to try and overcome this little quirk....as soon as Doug get back to me with any Info at all....I will pass it on

Since I have so many Stang owners answering me on this one.....I got a question for you all.....I want to get the 91 Race Tune (93 isnt available here ) and wabnt it for a staedy Tune......what can I expect from it....over the 87 Performance Tune that I am running now??? Can it be used as a Daily Driver?? Or will it be too radical for stop and go traffic??

Again I have a manual. And I have absolutely no issue using this as a daily driver including stop and go traffic. I've heard others say it was too much for them as a daily and preferred the torque or performance tune for daily driving. I'm pretty sure those guys had auto trans. Remembering and old post from Doug, I think he said that the only difference between performance tune and race tune was that the race tune had a more responsive gas pedal. So, I'm guessing, if you have an auto trans it might be a little aggressive if give it a little gas inch forward.

Here's an old thread that may answer some questions:

Yea it's fine with the Manuals, the autos can beat you to death in DC Traffic :-) I plan to install a new converter this should help me a bit.

I had a Manual for a several years in DC and well I am getting too old and my knee just can't work that hard anymore....
