Tremec Question

Guys,
What's the reason again on why the 5-speed is so noisy? No flaming intended here, but my 92 5-speed is as quite as a baby sleeping compared to the current trannie? Is it that the car interior is fairly quite compared to the older models (road noise) and the trannie noise is just more pronounced now?

Was there a shortcut taken in the development of this trannie?, etc..

Its been like that since the 3650 replaced the T-5 in MY01(starting with the Bullitt). They are just noisy beasts... The T-5 does whine a bit in the lower gears too(it actually makes the 05+V6 manual sound pretty good IMO). Personally, I kinda like the noises.

I think part of the reason for the whine is the beefier gears in the Tremec as opposed to the puny gears of the T-5. The Tremec has a much thicker gear width wise than that of the T-5

It is good to hear only whining of noise in these things where as in the old days you would hear of grenaded T5s every week. My TKO made noise like these also. I do think it is the bigger gears.

Yep I hated that old T-5! I blew up at least three of them before I bought a Tremec. Never missed a beat with it. THe T-5 however was a big POS. Not up to the task for anything above what came from the factory. Nothing more sinking than grabbing for a gear and hearing that "B O O M" then the rattling noise of gears and trans parts whirring around inside the case.

My 3650 rattles below 1000 RPM (I'm almost certain it is the gearbox and not the engine), whines at high RPMs, and is very notchy. Combined with the horrible throttle lag / hang, it makes for a clunky ride.

How noisy is the Auto trans? the same as the 5-speed?

Sounds like the bottom line is turn the strereo up and be thankful its a solid trannie..

I think I am going to Dynamat my tranny tunnel. After renting an auto V6 for a few days I was surprised by how "funeral home" quiet it was compared to my manual GT.

It's freaking LOUD! That shouldn't be the norm.

Just a reminder, the autos are 5 speeds as well, so you saying "5 speed" doesn't tell us anything.

Mine is a piece of cake to shift to any gear any time that I please Of course its going to chatter a bit driving it around idle. I come to complete stops and move on again with the clutch out the whole time and only get a little groan, nothing like the noises any fwd car would make.

Notchy it is. I'll take the beef though.

The gears may be built stronger, than the T-5, by changing the gear teeth from a spiral cut to more of a straight cut. It makes them beefier. The straighter the teeth get the noisier the meshing of the gears usually are.

Once you put a steeper gear ratio in, the tranny noise becomes 5x more noticable.
