How much work and money would be involved in taking the stock automatic and putting in a good 5 or 6 speed? it's something i'd be interested in doing in a few years, because as much as i think my car is perfect, whenever i dream about driving it i am rowing through the gears

A fully built out TKO 600 will run you $3500. Custom shifter, cryo, polish, girdle, clutch, flywheel, external hydraulic adjustment, scatter shield.
A viper T56 with shifter and driveshaft will run you $5K. As far as what's involved in the switch, I couldn't tell you.

The first thing I would want to know is if the same crankshaft is used in the automatic as in the stick. Let's say I sincerely doubt it would be a walk in the park swap.

It would probally be less expensive to trade up for one with a stick.

I'm not aware of any such kits, but I'm pretty sure it CAN be done. You need to buy all the parts (gearbox, clutch assembly, pedals, shifter), plus you're going to have to fabricate some more, like a plate for the inside of the pedal panel. Also, I'm sure a CPU reflash is needed.
My dad and his mechanic friend did it on his old car and he had lots of problems until they fabricated a solid plate able to cope with the clutch pedal's forces, because the original pedal panel was different for the auto and the manual models. I don't remember exactly all the mods they had to do, it was a long time ago.
I'd suggest you make a list of all the parts you need and then get a quote from a garage/dealer for the installation. Hope it's not going to be more expensive than trading in your auto for a manual.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Try and find someone willing to swap cars.

Otherwise, you're almost better off selling your car privately and buying a new '06. It won't cost you much more than doing a swap.

I know of one guy doing it now and I'm waiting on him before I start. It looks like a 3500-5000 dollar swap depending on what you use. It may be less of a nightmare than I originally thought, but again I'm waiting on him to finish before I start.

Thanks Mike

The main concern I would have would be the ECU. I'm not positive, but I think I heard somewhere that you'd have to replace the ECU for some reason. I'm most likely wrong on this one though.

If you can find a wrecked manual transmission car, that should be a good source of everything you need, including the fact that you can take pictures of how the pedals hang, master and slave cylinders mount, etc etc.

This is correect, yes the SCT software can disable these functions but there's still more needed then a simple reflash. You'll need a different PCM and there is some wiring for the Drive by wire system that has to be changed as the inputs are just a bit different. I can't explain it in detail right now but I've seen a post about it before.

Later Doug.

She'll be racing with us this year in her Mustang. I don't think Mike's son can hold a camera up yet. You should just get a camera and mount it under your car. That would be a cool shot of it.
