For those of you who have modded your daily driver, do you tone down the performance in preparation for winter?

I just installed a CAI and Tune. Its my first performance mod. And I wasn't expecting such an increase in responsiveness from the starting line. I was sitting at a stop light, and when it turned green, I barked the tires. I was used the lag before.

But now I'm thinking about when there is snow on the ground. I remember last year, I would have to creep for a long time before the car actually took hold. But with the faster responce, I can see myself spinning the tires in the snow more than usual.

So I was wondering if I should remove the CAI, and reinstall the stock tune for winter.

 

Because my car is a daily driver, I put my stock tune back in for the winter. I have a K&N CAI so I don't have to go back to the stock airbox. Next up, I'll put my snow tires back on.

The car feels much more "tame" with the stock tune. Still powerful, but not as ready to leap off the line as with the stock tune and doesn't chirp the tires as much.

 

The Steeda CAI requires a tune, right? I can't just go back to the stock tune.

 

use an fuel economy tune and turn on TCS?

 

if I had to drive my car through another winter I would put my suspension back to stock and install the 87 tune instead of the 93 tune I have in it now. Did you get 3 tunes with your tuner or just one?

 

yeah, I got 3 tunes. right before the tune, I was close to empty so I put 93 in it. So its tuned to 93. I wasn't sure how much of a difference their is between the octane tunes.

 

theres a big difference in mine. Throw the 87 in yous and let us know how it feels. That is when its running on 87

 

Mines a DD as well and the only thing I do is switch back to the OEM rims/tires. Just drive smart and slow, you'll be fine.

Last winter was my first winter with the mustang. And it was the first time Ive lived in Michigan. At least in Ann Arbor, they don't plow the road until after the morning rush. So when you go to work, there could be 8 inches of fresh power-snow on the road, because they don't salt, or plow it. I just remember trying to get going from a dead stop. It was painful. I never really broke the wheels loose, but I just couldn't get any momentum to get going.

That was one of the many things I hated about Michigan. Good thing I'm back in Illinois where our state care about their inhabitants. lol.

 

I drove my mustang last winter in the snow. I can say that I am very impressed. It never got out from under me even if I tried. I am used to driving rwd with an open diff in the snow. This thing keeps the power in check and keeps itself from going out of control.

The only issue I had was downshifting. It got slightly loose when I downshifted too hard even then the TCS kept it in check. I learned quick and basically coast instead of downshifting until I can stop. Engine breaking in snow is a bad thing. Again I was used to my fathers astro with open diff and very light tail.

 

Seems like a lot of effort when you could just be easier on the gas pedal.

 

I got a snow tune from Brenspeed for winter and for when my wife drives. I too was so impressed by how much a tune wakes up these cars. My wife, not so impressed.
I put on studless snow tires & installed snow tune this last week. Bring if on Mother nature.
Note: snow tune slowed response and gear changes (atou trans.). Much needed now that I have 4.10 gears.

 

I drive all winter here in Michigan, although not every day with the Mustang for my commute. I switch to my 87 tune for the winter, a little less peformance but more than the stock set up. Never have had a problem getting around in the snow.

 

I just had 4.10s and a TrueTrac installed for the winter and it's my DD.

I spent a few hours today enjoying the 70* weather installing a PCV catch can on my car

mmm, 1st full winter with not needing to drive the stang. Its been sitting in the driveway for 2 weeks, I bet it wont even start, lol.

I never did anything for winter other than putting 17" stockers on with snow tires.

 

Get some snow tires on the Stang.
