throttle body cleaning questions

reading through some threads - and performing some searches - it seems like the "you need to clean the TB" comes up as something that needs to be done for some hesitation and stalling issues.

my question is does this only occur with those cars with the CAI installed? (i dont recall finding a thread with a stock car having these issues) and if so - is this because of any particular issue (i.e. - only if you over-oil the filter etc..?)

thanks in advance..

I had one issue about 20,000 miles ago where I oiled both sides of a K&N drop in (ID-10T error). Surging idle and stalling after long 70~80 mph runs. None since then.

I have the Steeda CAI and I really wasn't having any problems. However , after I read on another thread about cleaning it , I cleaned both it and the mass air meter. The mass air meter really wasn't dirty and I think that's what the oil in the filter is supposed to affect the most. The throttle body had quite a lot of soot on it and definitely needed cleaning. So I guess I'll do it periodically as part of my maintenance routine ...

I think the junk on the TB gets there no matter if you are running stock or modified. For whatever reason though, it doesn't seem to affect the stock cars...only the cars with modified intakes/tunes.

I noticed this on my own car. It had 40K miles on it in stock form when I put my JLT on it. Immediately it had idle problems when I let off the gas in neutral while coasting to a stop. I took it back off and cleaned up the TB. Immediate improvement.

The best way is to pull the TB off , that way you can clean both sides. There's another thread on here where the type of cleaners to use were recommended. I got the TB cleaner and the MA cleaner , you don't want to use regular carb cleaner on the TB ...

This was the thread where doug talks about how to clean the TB including a cleaner recommendation (further down).

What's so special about TB-cleaner? (I have a beef about paying for "special" chemicals that turn out to be glorified windex or DW40.)

TB cleaner has methanol and MEK that carb cleaner doesn't.

I do know that TB cleaner will pull 67 year old Cosmoline AND stain out of a gunstock in two spray/wipe passes. Carb cleaner would have taken 10~20 passes and only gotten MOST of the cosmo, so there is a definite difference in the chemistry. The cosmo looked at WD-40 and windex and laughed.
I pulled my TB & cleaned it in about 20 Min.

TB Cleaner

Rather than taking the TB apart I have been using this product called the Intake Snake for about 6 years now. It is a little pricey but it works like a charm and is a quick process, info at

From what I read the TB has a coating on it the carb cleaner will remove, TB cleaner clean the TB without removing the coating.

Then can you just use MEK?
That stuff cleans residue off everything.

Check out the attached pdf.... to use in conjustion with cleaning the TB.
It might help with some of the hesitations, especially with a oiled filter.

Kinda late posting this, but I tried to get some TB cleaner from Advanced-Auto...no dice as usuall...don't know why I bother ever going in that place...

Anywho, so I decided to just pop the hood and take the CAI off the TB just to see how much grime might be visible.

Nothing.

So, call me dumb, but I said "Ah, what the heck..." and used a soft-rubber-handled pair of pliars to push the valve open while I ran a paper-towel sheathed finger quickly inside.

Nothing.

Some small little black marks, barely visible.

Guess the TB is fine.

Almost 22,000 mi. here, just put on a JLT2, looked at the TB before I put it on, no grime, barely any carbon build-up, pretty much what Arrow said. Guess there's benefits to getting a used K&N panel filter from a buddy!!

instead of getting the TB snake get a 12 gauge cloth style bore cleaner from bass pro or equal. it may be a little smaller than that but they are about $10
and they make one in a similar design.
