I have a questin for you sir Bill ?
this install http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showpo...19&postcount=1
I don't see any mention of the carbon trap or that honey comb cyclinder piece between the stock airbox & Black flex pipe right about buy the sensor . The K & N I got for my 2005 GT had instuctions to say to remove it from stock & put in the K & N between the Filter & tube again by sensor. A friend right now is currently in the midst of installing one & he read that someone did some Dino stuff with this carbon thing & without , I think it goes on that it is a bad thing to put in & that Ford may have stopped using them . If at all can anyone shed any light to this Please & Thank-You Ed

Ed I just came across this in a forum while I was reading up on the carbon trap. I believe this guy so I am not putting the filter on until I can afford the tune to go with it. Read the article. He is answering guys who took the trap out and did not get a reflash which I believe is a tuneup. Also I think Ford stopped the carbon trap in 2005. So I don't even know if it is safe to run without it using a KN filter

You WILL damage your engine, maybe not around the block but over time and maybe even on a cross country trip!! I am not kidding, there is so much air (much hotter 'fire') and very little fuel = lubricant! A fun fact too is that even though the flash adds fuel the car will run leaner and save you fuel (compaired to stock), but formost it will save you the engine!

I am not kidding, I have seen dyno runs live and it comes out the same every time, exhaust temp almost doubled and the fuel flow decreased from stock before the flash! Not good!!

You paid +$200 for the CAI (or some time removing the cigarett filter) for 5-15 RWHP, now spend 375 more to double that AND get a quicker throttle response and many other benefits (not to mention 8 pistons plus labor...)!!!

This is true, carbon trap used only on the 05's.

I can't say if it's 100% safe to run without it without a tune, although the air/fuel will be somewhat lean, I don't think it'll be as bad as 'KJ' says.

All I can suggest is to run it on the dyno without the trap and see where the A/F is... or, get a tune that'll maximize the efficiency of the K&N CAI.

My '06 does not have the trap of course.
I did run a dyno before my tune with only the K&N CAI.
The A/F meter actually showed I was running RICHER with just the K&N after I had run it for 1000mi. or so. I found out that this is not unique.
Apparently after a while, the car must overcompensate for the greater airflow. Not good, but not lean so it will damage the engine.
The rich condition will cause carbon build-up, but won't cause major damage.
The tune of course, adjusted the A/F to proper levels.

This is wierd I wonder if it's a Canadian requirement as My 07 GT/CS did come with one in it ? or when I sold my 05 GT I forgot I had it ? as I don't really understand it's purpose other that a mouse could not get though it lol but would restrict some air flow ? I'll try if it stops raining today. Thanks for all the input & help all.

a Dyno seems funny I don't think they'd have one here on the Island let alone what one is ? I will try to have one done one day, like next trip to the warm California Sun

Hello

I have got K&N 57-Series CAI installed with Carbon Trap on it and Superchips Flashpaq custom K&N CAI 91 Octane Fuel tune. Mustang GT 2005.
Should I take out the Carbon Trap or not?
What should be the Correct A/F ratio for may car now?

Regards
Sea

I have them, but didn't do a write-up on them.

From what I remember about the install, do one side at a time (or else risk the hood going out of alignment if both sides are loosened).

Take note of the orientation of the strut and the brakets. There have been several guys that have installed them backwards by mistake, so take your time and orientate them correctly.

If having difficulty threading the 2 bolts into the hood, position your hand around the backside of the hood (windshield side) and carefully lift it a little while starting the bolt with the other hand.

Also note that if you aren't planning on covering the bolt heads, the paint on them will mar from regular sockets! Take precations to protect the paint finish on the bolt heads. There are special sockets available that have a rubber/plastic insert just for this purpose.

Mac sells them in sets, but they're $$$. I was hoping for Craftsman but they don't have them.

In case I bought a set, what would be more useful, SAE or metric?
