Swapping computers

Say I wanted to ship a computer off to Steeda for their adaptive tune. I had a computer from another car or a new one.

Would I have to load the stock tune onto a Flash device and upload the same to the "new" computer, install it on the car and see if it runs. Or is there more? Would loading a stock tune from one car to another cumputer even work?

I assume that the strategy code would be the same if I loaded the stock tune onto the new computer.

Thanks.

certain years and options came with certain computers so you would have to find another computer that is from a car that is an exact copy of yours, meaning same trans, same rear end, same build date all just for the chance it might work. Its not as easy as loading up your old tune. I know on the older mustangs it was as easy as just finding a computer out of the same engine and trans as your own but i do not think it is the same for these new cars that are computer dependent.

Thanks!

After looking at the Steeda docs last night on the adaptive tune, there is quite a bit of code in these computers. That is why you have to send yours in to them. More than can be stored on a flash device.

I don't know if I want to go that route yet..mine is a DD and it can't be down much. I'd have to rent something while it is out. I thought getting another computer from another car, loading my stock tune on it, and sending that one to them might be an option.

This brings up another question. I guess if you fry a computer, there is more than just plugging in a new one. That doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. And you probably couldn't yank a computer from a Bullitt or a '10 and get away with it.

It would be cool to find out how much is stored in these things and what you would have to do to change one. Do they come with the non car specific code already loaded or what? Might be a good thing to know down the road when these cars get older.

Makes sense that tuners can make the big $$. Ain't that easy as it might seem. I doubt anyone with the knowledge would give it up.

If an adaptive tune were too big for a flash tuner then the Bullitt owners wouldn't be able to get an aftermarket tune. I haven't heard of that happening. Steeda stated earlier that this tune of theirs was developed through technology sharing with Ford. First they said that it would work with any aftermarket CAI and later they said that it would only work with their CAI and you would need their delete plates as well.

Any 07 or later PCM will have enough memory for the factory adaptive tune and Steeda states that theirs will fit as well. They were even working on a flash kit the last time I chatted with them back when they first started advertising their tune.

P.S. you can read all about it at:

Centurion96,

Thanks for the link! It is interesting that there aren't many out there that talk about this type of tune. It might be nice to have but is the benefit that great.

Over the past year I've spoken and e-mailed several tuners. The Bullitt tune is out there if you want it however it will still retain some of the undesirable attributes of the stock tune. Notably the throttle lag and that 8 second step down on deceleration.

In another direction I have found it interesting that VMP tuning here in Central Florida has an E-85 tune that on a NA GT with a C&L intake and CMDP got 9 more horsepower and 9 more ft. lbs. of torque than their 93 octane tune. We need more E85 stations and I hope that comes about as this looks promising as long as E85 can be had at cheaper than E10 prices. Just a thought. If I go FI later then this is a serious option.
