How about a round piece of plastic (lexan or even thinner) and sanded smooth, between the bolt and the shift ball, that is about the the size of the top of the boot (the shift boot when slipped around the plastic it would be nice and snug to the ball??)

After doing the drawing you might need a spacer between the plastic and the shift ball (about the thickness of the o-ring in the factory boot)
