Ruby goes racing

Ruby now has a little over 500 miles on her so it was time to stretch her legs a little. I headed down to Moroso drag strip for their Friday night test and tune session with visions of world records dancing in my head.
The first thing I noticed is there are a lot of fast cars out there. The second thing I noticed is that I'm really not very good at this anymore. The final thing I notice is that driving technique has changed a lot from my days with my 14.7 second '69 Road Runner.
First run: 2,000 rpm launch; dump the clutch and bog the engine. Power shift to second and third.
14.7 @ 96 with 2.3 60 ft.
Second run: 4,000 rpm launch; dump the clutch. Lots of wheel spin and axle tramp. Bounce off the rev limiter and power shift to 2nd. Miss 3rd gear, find 5th gear. Go back to 3rd and put tail between legs.
15.6 @ 88 with 2.6 60 ft.
Third run: 4,000 rpm launch; slip the clutch (first time I have ever tried this). Good bite, little if any wheel spin but still a little axle tramp. Power shift to 2nd but granny shift to third. Did shift to 4th just before line which may have cost me a little.
13.95 @ 99 with 2.1 60 ft.
When I picked up my timing slip the guy said I would have to have a helmet before I could run again. They have a rule that says you need a helmet if you run better than 13.99. I don't think I have ever been so happy to be disqualified in all my life
I went home with a much deeper respect for the guys who are actually getting these things to run mid 13's. It takes a lot more driver skill than just flooring the gas and dumping the clutch.

Remember to launch on the second amber light. Waiting till the green will cost you a huge amount of reaction time.

Good times Boss! Man i hate to say it, but the 05's defintely give my car a run for its money.
Some dude here in vegas was like dude the mustangs are slow i saw one running a 16.5. I said it must have been a v6 and he said it was a gt. Then we got into an arguement and we had to get sepperated. So can anyone give me driving tips or racing tips?

Two questions:
On the third run, why did you granny shift into 3rd, and secondly, why did you shift into 4th at the end?
Once again, thanks for your posts!

OK, maybe only half true
After missing third on the second run, I was more than a little gun-shy. I made the decision to granny shift third about 3 microseconds before I did it. The decision to go into 4th was a bit more complicated. When the tach was somewhere north of 5,000 rpm, I had about a ten minute conversation with myself. I considered how far I was from the finish line, I analyzed the performance of myself and Ruby thus far on this run and finally I remembered one of our members saying his ran faster by shifting into fourth. After carefully weighting all these items, I made the decision to shift to fourth. Being satisfied with that decision, I then turned to the question of power shifting or granny shifting fourth. I though back over the previous two runs and realized I had not had any problem hitting fourth. So I made up my mind to do it when I suddenly remembered that I had not gone fast enough to warrant going to fourth on the two previous runs and that was why I did not have a problem shifting! This did throw considerable doubt into my mind about going to fourth or not. . . . . I finally decided to go for it and as luck would have it, I successfully completed a full power shift to fourth! The Boss Hog

If you look at the dyno curve of the 05 it keeps climbing all the way to redline at 6K, so according to that it would make no sense to shift into 4th unless you are hitting the rev limiter (which I believe is set at 6250 or something like that).
I'm open to being corrected though. B)

I don't know how long you've been drag racing, but that is just funny to me because I can picture it in my head you going through your second run. I see it time and time again when I go to the track, but it's all a matter of practice and getting to know your car and clutch. Oh and please don't expect your rear-end to hold up too long if you keep dumping the clutch at 4,000rpm!!! :nono:

Yes it should be when you see the last amber that you begin to launch. This will net a good reaction time. However, I don't know why people make a big deal about their R/T, you're racing against the clock and it doesn't start until you start moving. That is unless of course you're racing the guy next to you for some cash :P

second yellow? I always launch on the 3rd yellow and that nets me usually a .530 -.600 r/t on a sportsman tree. Launch on the 2nd and you will more than likely get a big fat redlight.

Duh! That's what I meant - the THIRD amber, not the second.
Thanks for pointing that out. I've edited my post to correct the mistake.

[/b][/quote]This whole series has been written in a maner to bring a little fun to the forum, not to hold myself up to ridicule. If I could not afford to break it, I would not be at a drag strip. But I can so please don't waiste your condescending attitude ( :nono:

PS 1st time on drag strip was 1966 in a '58 Pontiac Superchief at Fremont CA
Dunno what the hail that guy is talking about, because with this modular engine, you pretty much HAVE to launch at 4K or so in order to get into the torque curve, although slipping the clutch is definitely the way to go over just dumping it...not so much to save your drivetrain, but because too much wheelspin=crappy ETs.
Just like on my motorcycle, (which has a redline of 9,500), I launch at 5K or so. If I don't, it bogs...

"axle tramp"
Isn't that supposed to be what the live axle is supposed to be good at avoiding relative to an IRS and one of its main raisons d'etre over an IRS???
Good showing at the strip though, better get thyself to a helmet store :-)
