royal purple vs amsoil ss
What do you guys think. Which oil is better. I've been using royal purple for the past 4 years never had an issue but my car uses 6 1/2 quarts of them don't know why. It's a 2008 mustang gt full bolt ons I've heard good things about amsoil that it doesn't burn the oil as quick as royal purple. Any info......

A Man Just Needs Some....
Neither one will do your engine any better than the less expensive Mobil 1. Change it at a decent interval and your motor will last you just as long. Is RP and Amsoil better? Sure. Will you get a million miles out of your engine? Hellz no. Don't let the oil mafia cause you to spend extra cash on false promises. It's really not enough gain to ever notice a difference.

I agree with AlsCobra. As someone who has nursed 3 vehicles into old age (VW Fox - 200,000km; Nissan NX 320,000km and counting; Ford Aerostar 380,000) the important thing is to change it regularly. And change the filter every time.
As you are changing it regularly, I'd stick to what you know works.

Mine is a summer car only and I put on about 6000 miles. I change the oil mid summer and when I put it away - so every 3000 miles. I use good quality full synthetic (IMO - Pennzoil, Castrol or Quaker State) and buy it when it's on sale and I use a good filter (aka "not Fram") generally WIX and lately a Mopar filter. I've used this change interval on all my cars actually and never had an engine problem. Many say it is too often but I do it myself so that saves 1/2 the cost generally (about $50)and it lets me bond with the car LOL. I have a catch can (on the drivers side) and generally get about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of oil between changes.
I also change the tranny oil every year (drain and fill once about 4.5 liters and not the full flush which is 11 liters). I added a tranny dipstick so it is easy to refill now. Tranny filter change at 35,000 miles when I put in the dipstick. I read in an MKX manual that Ford suggests that rather than do a "flush" they recommend 3 drain & fills to get clean oil in the tranny so I figure a drain and fill every year accomplishes the same thing. When I did change the filter there was nothing in the pan and the filter looked quite clean so I'm not too concerned about changing the filter each time I drain & refill it.
Yup too often but I figure it's cheaper to change oil than to change parts. I want to keep my baby purring.

That's the key Change the oil with a really good Synthetic. I have 288,000 on my suburban. I use it as my daily driver and for work driving around the State. Had to pull the valve covers off and the dealer took pictures. It was the cleanest engine they have ever seen. I use Valvoline Synthetic on every change.
On these cars I am reading about the oil tick. Seems that there is some information suggesting the use of oils that have a higher than normal Zinc in them and you will never get the famous tick. Still investigating.

I have never tried any of the famous synthetic oils, or their matching filters, they are tempting, however, stock is nice, motorcraft works great, and if it's good enough for the manufacturer, I say that's goo enough for me

Here's a story FWIW I just changed my transmission fluid from the stock Motorcraft fill to the Amsoil fluid basically because of all the rave reviews I read on boards about how it "shifts like butter" and so on.
So I swapped the fluid.
There is absolutely NO perceivable difference in shifting.
I think with oil guys want to justify their purchase and so they do that.
Now... I think RP, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Motorcraft are all fine oils and you'd be fine going with any of them.
Like others wrote, change the oil at the recommended interval and change the filter and you'll be fine.
I have a fox body mustang ('91) that has almost 300k miles on it.
It's had Motorcraft, Mobil 1, and Royal Purple. But I change it at the required interval.

For years my father ran what ever conventional oil that was on sale any name brand with a Cheep basic a Fram oil filter and always got over 300,000 miles out of his cars and trucks. I run the Motorcraft Synthetic blend in my 2013 GT and my car runs great on it. You need to ask yourself what am I going to gain by spending big $$ on synthetic oil you will prob never own your car long enough to see any bennifit for running $8.00 plus per quart oil then running the much less costly Motorcraft oil. And you guys that bust on Fram filters don't really know what you are talking about yes the basic orange can is not the best but the Fram Ultra is one of the best filters on the market right now at any price.

I use my car, say once a week. Sometimes I dont. I change my oil/filter once a year (Spring). I know, its bad. So Id like to get in the good habit of changing it properly.

FWIW, Mobil 1 here. Many a car on it, no problems. And not gonna get a Fram filter.
Royal Purple I'll use in the transmission and axle because of the long term use, and the Syncrhomax does in fact work. I was skeptical, but yep. Worked. And the gear oil is a no brainer, honestly.
But when you are swapping engine oil out all the time, no need to pay extra or jump through hoops to get Amsoil or RP for that when there's Mobil 1 to be had for my every-5000-mile-dump.
That'd be me. You do what you feel is best, OP!
