if you put a set of gears in your car and they whine real bad can you reset it up to get rid of it or are you stuck with the noise?mine is really bad on the coast side and i need to do something.they are 4.10 by richmond gears. i have been told that if they whine from the beginning there is no way to eleminate it.

Lots of places only install the Ford Racing gears because they whine the least if at all. Never even heard of Richmond gears before.

Someone on this site has been through two sets of Ford gears installed by a top notch mechanic - both with poor results - before installing Richmond gears that were noise free. Richmond is a reputable gear and most likely aren't your problem. Less than perfect install, carrier imperfections and just plain bad luck are also big contributors.

In my case I went with Precision Gear 4.10's that howled. Precision is a quality gear. Swapped them out for Ford Racing gears and, wallah, noise gone. But, not everyone is having great luck with the Ford gears. It's hit or miss. My installer told me that more than once he has opened up a noisy rear, removed the ring gear from the carrier, rotated it 180 degrees, put it back together and it was quiet. Slightly imperfections in differentials can make for big noises. Been there.

I had 3.90 Motive gears and it whined at around 50 mph.

I then had 3.73 Precision gears put in and it whined at all speeds.

I then had FRPP 3.73 gears put in and it was finaly quiet. 3 Gear swaps to get it perfect - lol.

It was quite frustrating and expensive - lol

I just had my FRPP 4.10's installed this weekend. No whine at all, and these things rock!!

I've heard that the Ford Racing gears are the best, 0 whine.

I've only heard of Motive Gears causing whine.

I havent experienced any whine with my Motive 3.90's, but I watched my tech like a hawk when he put em in, though...

FRPP gears are made by Richmond.... Good stuff. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I just put some FRPP 3.73's in mine and there is a small whine when I'm not applying any gas, otherwise they are quiet. Considering it's a 6 year old Stang and I also had to replace the axle bearings and seals, along with bearings in the rear diff (it was so loud I couldn't talk in the car), I can live with it.....especially since I usually have the stereo cranking. I just wish you could custom order a Stang from the factory with upgrades such as gears, etc.

you could 35 years ago.i dont understand if 5 speeds get 3.55 gears why cant the automatics get them.

My FRPP 4.10's whine like crazy. I am going back on Thursday to swap them for another set and see if that helps.

Hate to being this back to life, but my 4.10's were put in on Monday. Didn't hear a whine, but it was raining and I have a vert. Today is the first day I had it out since then. I have a high pitched whine that starts at about 30mph. What concerns me is the rear end starts to howl if i make a turn at low speed. Obvoiusly the noise changes sides depending on the weight transfer. Any Idea what this might be???? Is it unsafe to drive?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I had a BAAAADDD day today. On top of the whine, my Xenon hood scoop decided to fly and be free on I 95 this afternoon doing about 85mph. Luckily no one was behind me. The scoop is ruined, but at least it didn't smash the windshield.

i have 4.10s in my car, and there is a slight whine at low speeds, but if you have the radio on (at all) its barely noticeable...and i notice it. my girlfriend doesnt hear it at all (but she dont really know what to listen for), so its not real obvious. no big deal to me.

I have the FRPP 4.10's. I can live with the slight whine, but what's up with the howl when i turn????

Had the same problem with my 90 LX after having gears put in. Major whine that was extremely loud around 40 mph. Brought the car to a different shop. The guy that originally installed the gears crashed the pinion bearing when he did the install. The new shop removed everything, reinstalled all the parts and new bearings and never had a problem after that.

Richmond is one of the most popular and well known gear makers out there. There stuff is usually top notch. I would not be surprised to find that they make Ford's gears.

I just did a search on that whine during low speed turns. They added friction modifier and it went away. I tried to ask the shop if they used it, but they are blowing me off. Anyway, maybe this will fix it??? It didn't do it before the gear change.

ahhh now you guys got me all worried about the 3.73 I am going to have installed. I want this done right the first time, but have NO idea what to watch for when they are being installed.

Is it really just a case of really touchy gears, or is it a deeper problem, like an uneven carrier from the factory??

I guess I can only find out the hard way.
