Rear shock install question

Hey guys, I'm going to install some Koni orange rear shocks tomorrow and I'm wondering about the need to replace all of the fasteners. I've had several Mustangs in the past and this is the first time I've seen Ford call for the replacement of suspension fasteners. Is it really necessary or is Ford being overly cautious? What's you opinion? Thanks.

just look at the bolts , see what condition they are in and make a judgement call . I myself am pretty **** on that kind of thing , I would go over board and put in new grade 8 bolts . But that is just a long time mechanic talkin , I would use lock tight as well .

The fasteners used on the shocks are not torque to yield. I would reuse them and use loctite, unless of course there is obvious damage to them.

I reused them, but without loctite. Just finished the install. Did the Koni orange shocks and Steeda Sport springs. Going to tackle the front next weekend. I'm using matching Koni orange struts and Steeda Sport springs. Do I need to replace the bolts on the strut to steering knuckle?

I didn't locktite the rear shocks and reused the nut on top of the shock. I did however use locktite on the steering nuckle. As per Sam's advice you really need to snug those front ones down. I would go overboard, but I'd say its upward of 120ft-lbs. I couldn't put much more on it. Hope this helps guys!

I am pretty sure that Ford recommends replacing the bolts at the bottom of the struts as they are a one time use bolt. I did not replace mine on my Bullitt when I installed the Steeda springs, but probably should have. I will be replacing them when I install new struts. Might get some Konis if they are ever again available in my lifetime!

I believe Ford changed from the original coarse thread bolt to a fine thread bolt with higher torque spec somewhere in the production run for the spindle to strut connection. I reused mine (2005 MY) when installing steeda springs, but if I ever have it back apart again I'll opt for the new bolts.

All of the bolts in the rear suspension are still coarse thread on my 2007.

just use the old **** hardware, you're wasting your money

I guarantee if you even had a dealership replace those they will reuse the old hardware, I guarantee it. Proof: go try to buy one at a dealer, they will have to order it, nobody stocks them because nobody uses new ones
