Rear Exhaust

Hi all, I am thinking about upgrading my Mustang. It's an 06 Vista Blue GT with stock exhaust. I'm looking for a deeper more throatier sound, but I don't want it to be crazy loud. I like the sound the old cobras (03-04 models) make. Any ideas on what brand/type would be the best. Thanks for any suggestions

To be brutally honest, there is NO way you're going to make a V6 sound like an '03 Cobra! I had a '03 Cobra with a Stinger cat-back and it was an awesome sound that could be heard a block away.

I just finished installing a stock GT exhaust on my wife's V6. She wanted it quiet so I stuck with the stock mufflers. Although it doesn't sound quite like a V8, it does have a rumble that's not so whiney as most smaller engine's sound. As for you, try to find a stock GT H-pipe, stock mid-pipes (they are mandrel bent) and go with aftermarket mufflers (axle-backs). If you go with duals, you'll have to decide whether to cut out a section of the rear bumper or go with a GT bumper.

Or you may want to keep your single exhaust and go with an axle-back....

I believe he has a V8.

With the exhaust behind the rear axle on these Mustangs, its hard to get them to sound quite like the older ones. I would suggest the stinger style muffler (they're all about the same) but they have some serious drone. If you live in a state where emissions are not a problem, an offroad H pipe and a chambered muffler might give you the sound your looking for. I'm presonally stock and in about the same situation as you, so I'm waiting for someone with more experience to chime in.

If I read the description GM's car looks to be a GT a 2006 GT not a V6

So given its a GT V8 I would do the FRPP GTA's

I have the FRPP Stingers and I like the sound, drone is not an issue and for me its not to loud, its just right. And everyone who hears it just nod their heads with approval.

When I had stock manifolds, I loved the sound of the stingers, it was perfect, there was drone, but it didn't bother me much.

BUT

Once I got longtubes, it was an entirely different story. The drone became unbearable and after a year of not being able to hold a conversation in my car, I went with the GTA's.

Nice compromise IMO. It's not as deep as the stingers were, but the drone is gone and it stays pretty quiet until I get on it, then it's almost as loud as the stingers were.

If you don't mind the drone, the stingers are hard to beat. If you hate drone, then I think GTA's are a good choice

I love my Bassani's!!! They are a little more $$ but worth it in my opinion. Very very deep sounding, sounds like an old school muscle car when you get on it!!

+1 they sound great. I found a used set on ebay and replaced my GTA's with them.

Curious since I've never heard the GTA's in person. How did they compare to the Bassani's??

The GTA's are quieter and are not as deep sounding. Also you don't hear the GTA's inside the car as much unless your at or near WOT.

I just got SLP's, (on a V6 they do make it louder than a stock GT) and I think that they sound like the older cobras more than the FRPP's. But it's all personal preference.

GTAs, then cut out the cats, gut 'em, or cough up for an off-road H-pipe.

You won't sound like a Terminator with an axle-back setup. The closest I've heard was Bassani Race mufflers with an off-road H-pipe. Have a listen.

The only way you'll sound like a previous generation Mustang is by moving the mufflers the way Pypes has done with their mid-muffler system. I have Bassani Race mufflers (which I think are the best-sounding axle-backs for these cars) with a stock midpipe and I'm strongly considering this option, as I'm growing tired of the axle-back sound.
