Race tune vs street tune for daily driver?

I'm going to be picking up a Bama tuner from American Muscle fairly soon, but I'm trying to decide which would be the better tune for everyday use? Is the race tune too aggressive to use or would it be fine? Also, how much of a difference is there between a 91 tune and a 93 tune? Thanks guys!

I usually run the race tune. I have ran both and there is a difference between 91 and 93. Right now I am running the 91 performance because the station I was getting 94 at quit selling it so I am thinking about switching back to the 91 race.

The 93 Race tune suits me fine because of its sensitivity to throttle input. However, some owners feel it's too sensitive.

I run race 93 and I would never uses any of the other tunes. But obviously you're gonna want to run an octane that's readily available to you. I run it on my daily driver with 75k on it.

Do gas prices bother you guys at all? Maybe I'm just picky but is it worth the extra money for a 93 tune? I've been debating this for awhile and I am on the cheap side being a college student, but since I can't exactly afford a lot of mods right now. Thinking of bumping up to 93 despite gas prices. Is it worth it or do you guys just deal with it.

EDIT: I should mention I'm just running the tune, and pypes bomb axle back exhaust. No CAI(yet)

I didn't buy a mustang for gas mileage, but if it's .20 cents extra a gallon, and say u put in 10 gallons that's only $2 extra it's not a big deal.

Yeah no argument there, but I can get decent gas mileage. I'm just concerned if it's worth it. I don't mind paying but if it's minimal gain, then why bother. I'm getting cai in September, should I wait to get the 93 tune when I get the cai, or will I see a decent enough difference with just a 93 tune an no cai.

mrp5150,

The race tune will ensure the largest increase in vehicle performance. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory. This file is designed for "Race Use Only", as the timing, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. However a lot of guys run this tune on they're daily drivers with no problem at all!

The tune is definitely the best "bang for the buck" even if you're stock. A CAI will benefit you're car greatly, however you'll still see great gains without it. You'll see gains of 25+ RWHP & 35+ lbs of torque, with tune only!

Another great benefit to ordering with Bama is our Free Tunes For Life program. We can tune your car as it sits, then when you add more modifications all you gotta do is hit us up and we'll send you a revised file! I hope this helps, if you have any questions our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 10AM-3PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

25hp with just tune!?! I will be calling you guys ASAP for a new set of tunes. I'm running the 87 right now an like the difference. From my recent knowledge that gives about a 10hp increase? If I can bump up to 25hp an pay a little more at the pump, I'm in!!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely try out the race tune first. And Dan, I'll definitely be ordering a tuner from you guys at American Muscle.

You need a 93 tune and a CAI to get an additional 25 rwhp(+/-). A tune alone will not get you there.

I have 93 on my Race and Street tune. The Race tune has more top end power and the Street has more mid range kick. Thats how I understand it with the tunes that I have.

for my little 4.0, the 91 and 93 octane race tune has been my street tune for the last 5 yrs (anything less would be a waste of time, jmo)

I thought the 93 octane only came as Race. I thought Street and Performance were for lower octane values. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

tu3218,

We actually offer Street, Performance, and Race tunes for 93 octane. You can order any tunes you want for 93 or less octane. If any of you guys have more questions, give me a shout!

Don't use the race tune on the streets the only difference between the two is on the race tune they crank up your timing to a very unsafe amount

I use the torque tune 91, for me it's a good fit between the race and the performance. And I pay extra for quality fuel, it's worth it to me. I believe because of the fuel that I didn't have any problems replacing my spark plugs. The cleaner the burn is, the better for the car. But there are many here that have a lot more knowledge than I.

Where did you hear this from about the unsafe timing?

I love the race tune, combined with a good CAI it gives you plenty of torque. You just need to learn how to manage the throttle/rpms with street tires which will come after a couple days of driving with it.

The first time I mashed on the throttle in a turn and got a good fishtail going I learned my lesson
