Excuse my ignorance regarding this as I am just getting into car modification and only have my 93 to base my assumptions off of.

Why are the 05 mufflers so close to the tailpipes now? My 93 has them way back toward the middle of the Crosspipe(is that the word?)

 

They took the gas tank out of the rear of the car (where the Pinto had it), and put it under the rear seat, where the mufflers used to go.

So they took the mufflers and put them where the gas tank used to be.

It's much better from a technical point of view. Not only is it safer to have your gas tank midships, it also means there is less weight distribution change between full and empty tanks.
