I'm getting alot of growling noise when slowing down at about 5-10 mph. My installer seems to be a master on cars. He said gears will make some noise. I'm I just feaking out or should I be concerned.

No worries....I was having the same thing at 25. As long as it's not backlash then you are ok. Basically you have to remember the driveshaft is spinning alot faster than normal and it is different too with it being a two piece set up. My shop had to just rotate it one bolt hole from the stock setting and it cleared up the vibration I was getting. Have them adjust it,which might take a couple of times, but it will be fine.

I don' t know.....I've had about 6 sets of gears installed and have never heard a roaring, grinding, humming, or scraping sound from any of them....and I'm pretty sure I'm not deaf.
I would wonder myself also if I was you.....sounds like they weren't set up right....couldn't tell you the difference myself other than they don't make noise....but it really sounds like something is not right according to me...but remember, I'm just a forum opinion.

very concerned
I know a guy around here that sets them up w/ grease...don't really know the difference, but he is cheaper than most in this area, around 100.00
but there is a guy that I have taken all of my cars to since I was 16, (about 6 cars), who uses a dial indicator (or what ever, still not certain)...and I swear I have never had a problem, but everyone I know that has paid cheaply for a rear end gear swap has paid the price.
-as I was trying to explain I don't know the differnce personally, but there is a differnce in who is putting in the gear...hope this helps.

Don't stress, just take it back and have them put in a set correctly.

no offense by any means, but do you know if this is a reputable shop for rear end gears, b/c a lot of shops will say they can do them after they look in their mitchells labor database and realize it "should" only take about 2 1/2 hours.

?????also what brand gear was this?????

I'm curious had it been done by a Ford service only because I was in asking about something today and I do not even have the car yet and she tells me No you don't wanna do that as it will void your warrety , so just to protect myself I'll leave as stock as possible and the sevice /parts people will tell me that anything I am wanting that is an issue that they will STOP me. I guess they are caring enough to look out for me .

If you buy a Ford gear and have installed by a Ford dealer, it will not void your warranty. I have done so w/ a 98 Cobra, and made sure at the time of install that there would be no warranty issues.
Ford will rape you on the price of the install, but besides that you will still have your warranty.

no problem gotta have it, maybe things have changed since 98, but not to my knowledge, I still know a few people at the dealership that say the same.

It's strange that the Ford Racing gears are making noise......not trying to raise a concern, but I would take the car back by the shop and stress a warranty w/ them / if they think there is a concern. Also ask them how many 8.8 Ford rearends they have set up in the past, they aren't the same as the old 9" in which you could just bolt them in and that was it.

He did have to use shims, could that be it? By the way the car does run like a beast with the 4:10's.

Shims, or a combination of shims are used to position the gears properly. But at this point, you don't need to know how to set up a differential.........you should not be hearing a growling noise from the rear end....period!

Wild Strays right.
And I'm sure the car gets off w/ the 4.10's, I've got 4.30's on order now.

When the ring and pinion is not meshed properly...
[/b][/quote]

back lash is the clearance between the ring (Big gear) and pinion gear (small gear ) . Not enough clearance and they growl and wear like heck. Too much and car goes CLUNK when you go from a forward to a reverse gear. Not quite as bad. setting up a rear end is not a no brainier. The clearance is set with a shims that have to be the correct thickness to obtain the proper mesh between the gears. Using grease is a good shade tree method to check this but bluing and a dial indicator is the proper way. Takes a little time unless its correct the first time. You do get lucky every now and then.

In simpler terms, Mongoose is saying.....It isn't a problem that just goes away w/ time....unless the gear wears out and breaks....which would still be a good ways down the road.
