Price quote on 4.10 gears & install

Hey all,
I got this quote from my local Ford dealer for all parts, fluids, and install of Fros 4.10 gears. The quote is $800, does that sound right? i receive a Mustang Club discount on parts & labor and this is what they came up with. Should I look at other dealerships or does this sound good? I'm going with a Ford shop since car is new and I want guarenteed & warenteed work.
Feed back please, and by the way, we don't have a speed shop close.

Most people avoid the dealership when it comes to installing performance parts. Usually people go to custom/speed shops that specialize in installing aftermarket performance parts. $800 is expensive. The avg price is anywhere between $500-650 parts and labor. $500 range if you don't need new the install kit. Seeing yours is an 08, you shouldn't. Go with a custom/speed shop in your area. They also should guarantee their work. Remember, ford is not going to give you a warranty on your new gears.

A little over 2 years ago, I bought Ford Racing 4.10 gears for like $170 and then paid around $300 labor to have them installed. I think there was < $10 needed in additional parts since my car was a year old when we did the install.

check with the dealer, with them as dealer installed they could be covered by warranty. Dealer installed mine, ran about $720 from what I can remember. Mine are covered with a warranty.

I don't have a speed shop within a 2 hour drive of me. And even then I'm just guessing that town has one, but wouldn't know about their workmanship.
As far as warranty goes, from dealer I get 1 year on Ford parts, and a Lithia Assuerd warranty of 5 year or 50,000 mile on parts & labor. I was told this quote was worse case, if all new parts were needed. My car only has 2,500 miles on it.
If I can find Ford parts (gears & kit) cheaper they are fine with installing them. That part was like $250 for kit. Any good leads, I would appreciate it.

I've had my last three cars ring & pinion swap done at the Ford dealership I work for. I buy all the parts online ($200-$250, usually), and they provide the labor ($250-$500, usually). So, total for parts & labor has ranged anywhere from $460 - $800, depending on the car and corresponding labor.

I checked with the major speed shops in our area, and was quoted anywhere from $600 - $1200, so it really pays to shop around. And, don't count the dealership out as many have excellent techs who will get it done right the first time.

If you're in the Tri-Cities, WA, you may want to consider the long drive over to Everett, WA to have Randy's Ring & Pinion Services do your swap. Excellent reputation, parts in stock, same day installation, and they quoted me around $500 total (parts and labor). I ended up getting a deal as an employee through our dealership, so my 4.10's were done in house, but if I didn't work at a dealership then Randy's would have been worth the drive.

sorry to slightly thread hi jack, but first off i was also qutoed in the 800 range by a dealer, and I also felt that was really high. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good places in vancouver, bc that I could get an install done for a decent price.

$250 - $400 tops for the install. You can buy Ford 4.10s on ebay for $140 right now! You are getting ripped off, but it doesn't look like you have much of a choice

Gears are something you don't want to skimp out on. When we use the full installation kit with bearings, royal purple 75w140 and FRPP -A part number 4.10 gears, with labor is around 750-800.

If we were just to do the install kit (that doesn't include bearings), gears, royal purple gear oil, and install, it's around $700 dollars.

I'm sure there's guys out there that do it right for $150, but they are more than likely far and few. Most places that do it correctly are between 350-450 labor only.

He may or may not be getting ripped. Ask them if you're getting a FULL installation kit with bearings, or if they're getting you the 40 dollar install kit with just shims, gasket, pinion nut, and bolts.

Either way, you're not getting ripped... you're getting dealership labor costs. But if there's a problem with it, they'll eat it unlike "sals auto and discount tire / perms / bait & tackle shop".

I believe you get what you pay for, in general, and hear about so many people getting gear swaps that end up with whining from the rear end. Sure, some of that is from using an off-brand of gear instead of FRPP "A" gears, but I'd venture to say most comes from an inproper setup by a tech in a hurry.

It takes several hours to do a ring & pinion swap correctly and thoroughly. Dealers typically charge about $90-$95 per hour. Speed shops usually charge about $80-$120 per hour, so labor "should" be about $300-$400 for a properly installed gear set that's done-right-the-first-time. Add in cost of parts, supplies, fluids, shims, bearings, etc. and $800 is not a bad price.

Chris & Brian,
Thanks for your imput. This is what I kinda thought. I had a friend offer to do it, sorry, I do believe "you get what you pay for". Kinda like the doctor that offered his services to do my reverse vysectomy. I asked how many have you done, he said "none , I was taught in school how to do it". I decided right them to drive 4 hours to the nearst specialist. And I guess I didn't shop around for the cheapest heart transplant either. So I should show my car some love and do it right.
So, back to gears. I gather that for a warrentied job, this is reasonable.
Thanks all!!!

Steve, you'll feel better having it done right, even if it costs a few dollars more. Are you having it done at Russ-Dean Ford?

Brian,
There is no more Russ Dean Ford. Bought out by Legacy Ford. Seems like good guys and the GM from my favorite Ford store went there. I'd llike to know where you work so I could look you up and call ya. I'd like to run some things by you.
So, if you would shoot me a PM maybe with a #.
Steve

Lots of dealerships changing hands in these tough times! I hadn't heard about Legacy Ford buying Russ Dean Ford, but it's not surprising. The dealership I'm at has been a Ford store (same family, even) for 50 years. This year we added Lincoln and Mercury when Ford closed two very poorly performing Lincoln Mercury dealers near us and asked us to take over their franchises (we have a great track record for sales and service satisfaction).

Steve, great talking to you on the phone the other day. I think you're really going to love your car with the tuning and 4.10 gears. That alone should put your car deep into the low 13's should you ever hit the 1/4 mile dragstrip. There were plenty of big block musclecars back when you and I were young that couldn't do that! New heart, new car - get out there and play hard; we sure aren't getting any younger!

Good looking car, Steve. If Vapor Silver had been available in '07, I would have chosen it intstead of the Alloy Gray I chose.
