I am sure some passionate people will chime in here, but i want to put this out there to see what the masses have to say:

Is the 2007 shelby GT500 overrated? I mean for the same money (and some have great examples of this) you could build a much better car yourself. Yeah the shelby name on the car might make it a collector piece, but that aside do you think it is worth the asking price at most dealers? I am not talking sticker, because sticker is a pipe dream at most dealers.

I don't think you can take sticker out of this equation because the cars will be trading there relatively soon. And at that sticker price, I think they are an extremely good deal for what you get.

 

dissagree....500 horses for $42,000....unprecidented this day in age.

....with ADM...I can see your point....at 55K plus....you can buy a lot of powerfull and name brand stuff instead of a Mustang. Corvette, Porshe, Lotus,...but to mustang lovers who have to have and can afford "first year one owner" at any cost...its worth it to them I guess...to wait our turn untill they all get thiers.

 

500 hp isn't all that great (still P.D.Q.) for a car that weights 3920 lbs. And one of my friends from work bought a base 2006 Corvette last fall for $43k.

 

the GT500 is any thing but a base Mustang though....

 

For sticker I would say no its not overrated...its a hell of a car....its got looks and power and the car can be made into a monster very easily. We all, for the most part, use our GTs as a base and build hugely on them....the Gt500 is just a better base to start with.

 

I guess that depends on how you intend to drive it. To me (and for how I would want to drive it), that extra weight is totally unacceptable. It would take me many of thousands of dollars to "un-do" some of the stuff Ford did to it (and not just limited to the weight issue either).

And although they are a good looking car (compared to just about everything else out there), I think they are a distant 2nd in the styling department to a base Mustang GT. I'm not a fan of the hood or front end at all.

About the only thing I like about them is the extra cubic inches... and I have a hard time justifying the ~$15K differential between a GT and GT500 (at sticker) for around 50 cubic inches.

 

For what most dealers are asking for a GT500 right now, I'd buy a Z06, no question.

 

I have no idea if the current Shelby (GT500) will be worth what the first ones are - guess that answer will come 40 years down the road. Things are a little different now IMO than in the 60's. With superchargers, computer tuning, etc, alot more people can get a Mustang GT to probably run rings around a stock 500 if you want to spend some $ than back in the "good old days" The bottom line I think is that its a "Shelby" and thats what your paying for. If I could have gotten a 500 for MSRP when they first came out, I would have tried to fiqure a way to buy one....

 

Don't forget the 6-speed and nicer interior just to mention a couple of things.

 

First of all, a Z06 is a 70k car and GT500 ADM's haven't typically equaled that kind of change in along time.

That aside, the above is always an interesting statement if only for one reason. People on the internet state the same thing that you just did quite often, but in the real world nobody seems to actually be doing it...or at least not with great frequency. The used car market for the Z06 is huge relatively speaking, and new ones have worn discounts for a long time now. In fact, it's as easy, if not easier, to talk a dealership down on a Z06 now as it is on a run of the mill Z51. And this despite the fact that the Z06 is extremely low production to say the least and that some of those Z51's can get pretty close to the base price of a Z06.

Drooling over spec sheets is great, but getting behind the wheel is something else entirely and apparently a lot of folks weren't pleased when they did

Z51: A great car if not perfect.

Z06. Rolling proof that you can make a great car stupid fast for cheap if you don't care what you do to the car in the process.

To be fair the Z06 has gotten better since it's introduction. But first impressions stick, and the Z06 is still a bit extreme as a daily driver if it's going to be the only uber-Vette on the market.

 

For some this seems to be a emotional issue so at the sake of looking like a liberal I will take the politically correct path and say that the GT500 isn't for everyone. Someone stated that 500 hp for the price is a good value and I'd tend to agree with that provided the car goes at or near MSRP. Up here in Canada we tend to be cheap ****ards and dealers generally can't get away with charging huge markups over MSRP like they do in the US.
That being said the GT500 is worth every penny to the person who is willing to pay the price in whatever market they are in.
I like the car I really do but I'd rather start with GT and put my personal stamp on it. From a pure technical standpoint I think the S197 GT is a more "balanced" car and with so much great after market hardware available for it I think a properly modded GT would easily outdo a stock GT500 on a road course.
But not everyone is into doing it this way. Some would like to just lay down the cash for thier 500 hp and be done with it. I don't consider these people true car enthusiasts though.
You've got to be able to say that you have or had car parts in your living room and show a few skinned knuckles. I have more respect for a modded car than a production car.
The point I am trying to make is that the GT500 was provided as a good option for those who wanted something different than a GT or a V6.
Overrated? To some maybe but that is their opinion as we are all entiltled too.
You really want over rated? Honda Civic. THAT car is overrrated.

 

I think paying anything over sticker makes it overrated. At sticker I think it's a great deal. I can understand wanting to build a car as opposed to just getting one out of the box, but me personally I built my car...way cheaper than what a GT500 costs and I have more rwhp and rwtq than a Shelby out of the box, but I'm also not finished and have more to do that could get me up to the price of MSRP on a Shelby. With the Shelby you get everything....more cubes, supercharger, fuel system that can hold the power, forged internals, 6 speed tranny that isn't crap like the 3650. Ok so that right there makes it worth it to me. Those of you talking about building a car to get to that point I can understand, but then you add a pulley, intake, and tune to the GT500 and away you go. They are making ridiculous amounts of power with those cars relatively inexpensively. Now saying relatively inexpensively, I mean that after purchasing the car. To get you car in a position to run GT500 power you have to spend some cash, and I would argue that if you bought your car new then you're going to be close to $35K-$40k whenever you get to the point a GT500 starts at.

Basically this is a round and round topic. And believe I can see both sides cause I'm one who has built my own car...(still building) and want a GT500.

That degree of greed is just disgusting. It's not a freakin exotic!

 

The GT500 is overpriced IMO. And wayyyyyyy too heavy. I am still not even thrilled about the looks. It even looks heavier to me. Like it has more visual weight. And styling wise, inside and out, I just don't think it is all that great and like some of the things about the normal GT better.

Considering the newest "normal" Z51 vette is now 440 hp, and runs rings around a shelby for the same money or less, I say, ford missed the mark. But thats me. The ZO6 is not even in the same catagory performance wise as the shelby.

But I guess if one wants a 500hp, four seat car, and likes the mustang, it has it's niche.


That is not to say the car does not have it's good points. Those Brembos do a **** good job of hauling a 3450 lb GT to a stop in one quick hurry.

 

More fun to mod my own. The base GT is easier to start from, as there is no guilt associated with any "undoing" prior to making it my own. And, anyway, who cares what it would be worth down the road. I want to go down the road now. Later is irrellavent, unless your an heir..........
