I haven't. I get 2 a year, so Ron gets one, and you get the other one.

Nope, mine's still sitting in the box.

If you want a Red Top, I'll give you mine next time I come up, and I'll just order another one in the meantime.

It takes quite a while for it to show up.

That's just how it works for me to get my employee discount. By the time mine arrived, I had forgotten that I ordered it.

No sweat man! It all comes around.

I also get a nice discount on Sprint phones. Working for a global company has it's perks!

How much do this batteries go for. Do they fit in the stock box and hold down etc? Never used one of these before but will like to update later when doing system mods etc. Thanks for any info on these.

I saw the Optima Yellow Top at COSTCO today for $169. Not sure if that is a good price. I think the D34/78 fits right in the existing location. Web site says the Yellow Top is 10"L x 6 7/8"W X 7 13/16"H.

Stock batteries for our S197s are Group 96R or 40R (higher capacity).

I got my brand new yellow top for 75 bucks, nice to have connections. I got it from an audio shop, where I used to know the guys.

The problem with the Optima is the wasted space found in the voids in between the spiral cells. The end result is the Optima generally has a smaller capacity than most flooded lead-acid batteries of the same size. The only advantage to using an Optima in a daily driver car is if you need to mount the battery in odd locations (inside the cabin, upside down, etc...) because the sealed VRLA AGM design is inherently safer to use in close proximity to the driver.

For most daily driver applications, the Optimas are a waste of money unless you have connections. Even then I'd be inclined to find a battery that fits the stock tray instead of finding a way to fit the battery in your try.

You can pick up a solid flooded lead-acid from Wal-Mart, Meijer, or Autozone for $50-$60 that will last 3-6 years easily (with up to 10 years warranty total).

I've had EXCELLENT luck with the Redtops, FWIW. I bought one way back in '95 and used it daily for three years, no problems. I took it out in '99, it sat in the garage for almost 2 years (temps from -5 to +90) and when I put a voltmeter on it, 12.2 volts. Put it in the car, and it fired right up. I don't know if that's typical or not, but I was VERY impressed.

The Red Tops are designed for SLI applications (starting, lighting, ignition) while the Yellow Tops are primarily intended for deep-cycle applications. I believe there is also a warranty difference. The Yellow has a 1 year, while the Red has a 3 year with a 100 month pro-rated warranty.
