Open Headers
After seeing Don_W's open header video, i've been really thinking about doing this. How much louder are open headers compared to the SLP's. This is my daily driver and so far I havn't had any trouble with the SLP's, what are the odds I'll have problems with open headers. Also are they any problems that can arise with the car itself by doing this?
Believe me... it is way too loud to drive around as a daily driver. As much as I love the open header sound, it's just not realistic.
In CA? Dont even think about it. You'll get pulled over the first day you try to drive around. Not to mention I dont even think you can put LT headers on in CA. Does anyone make a CARB approved LT?

Not planning on getting long tube headers, was just thinking of removing the cats and then leave everything else the same. So it looks like I still have an exhaust system from the rear. But with a mean azz sound.

Louder than the SLPs? ohhhhhh yes.... bad for the car? well, not really. The back pressure is not BAD for it... you may lose some bottom end but it wont HURT anything. I am basically doing this.... I will have straight pipes off the stock headers. I got the off road H pipe from brenspeed and I am going to hook it to my loudmouths and see how it sounds. I will have vids on tuesday.

Apparently you folks have forgotten about me, I've been doing it for more than 2 months on the streets of San Mateo and San Francisco counties. I may not be around on fully "open headers", did that for about 3 days after the initial install, but I run straight pipes all the way to the rear. Believe me when I post that once the pedal goes to WOT it sounds just the way it did for those first 3 days. Around town I usually keep it under 2500 to stay under the radar but I just cant seem to help myself at times.

I had seen the first video, hadn't seen the second one. Thats sounds freakin awesome. I think that made up my mind, those cats are coming off this weekend. How much different will it sound with the stock headers. emperorjordan?Any more videos Cleveland?
For now, thats all I have, I havent had anybody else along for a ride recently to take any clips. I'd like to get a good idle quality video while in drive cause it does sound fricking awesome. When I do get it I will definitely post it. The next time I take a road trip I hope to hook up with someone down south.

No way have I forgotten, Dan!! Your original vids were my inspiration. I must have watched those 50 times. :worship: :worship:
I haven't forgot about your turndowns either. I'm keeping those in mind as I sort through this sound quality issue. Do you still have trumpets in the middle rpms at partial throttle even with the turndowns?
I drove mine for about a week with JBA shortys, the bassani xpipe without the cats, and no mufflers.
couldn't stand the trumpeting.
without cats- http://surfnsocal.com/vid/SurfnSoCal/open.mpg
much better with the hi-flow cats on....under 4k sounds like a muscle car...and over 4k sounds like a NASCAR.

Isn't removing the cats just as illegal? If your going to walk on the wild side might as well go for the LT's

I would get the LT's, but that "side" of wild is to expensive for my college budget. :bang:

There is no way you can be serious. I will never beleive that.
This is America, right?
He is half right, you can pretty much do what you want with your car, legal or not. Its only illegal if you get caught. My car is far from the definition of street legal but I obviously dont care.
Long Tube Headers are "illegal" in the Republic of California, every shape and size, so is modifying or (re)moving the cats.
