Only 12.5 MPG. What gives?
I have put just under 500 miles on my Mustang in about a month, and I only get 12.5 MPG. I am in what is basically city traffic, with stoplights every few blocks. I haven't been on any major highway trips yet. Not that I'm complaining, I love my car, but shouldn't I be getting more mileage per gallon?
Heavy foot, consistant hard accelleration, poor shifting technique and stop and go driving will all cause poor fuel mileage. Cold weather also tends to diminish fuel mileage slightly. After 1,700 miles, I would consider your car broken in which simply means it's one of two things. Problem with the car, or your driving technique. (could also be both, but doubtful).
My Mazda6 got subpar gas mileage until about 5,000 miles then it began creeping up and now it gets exactly what it's supposed to get. I don't know of the '05 will be the same or not. I think they build them a little tight.

I dumped the car once this happened. I had read that others experienced the same thing, mostly on the '03s. Some people were even talking about aftermarket clutches. I wasn't getting involved with that on a $22,000 car.
I see you have an auto so it really has nothing to do with RPM's, well, unless you are using 1st and 2nd drive which is nuts. Anyway it will take a while to get better but if you constantly stomp on it don't expect much more than what you are getting now. I average 23mpg with my manual.
I'm getting 12.5ishMPG almost exclusively city. I think thats pretty darn good considering it being a V8. My 89 ranger with a V6 got 11ish, even my gas hating civic got 21ish.
I'm actually pretty impressed with my fuel economy, not nearly as abysmal as I thought it would be.

Mines an auto (bad knees :bang: )
Mine averaged around 13 mpg, city driving when I first got it. I think it was a couple thousand miles until it crept up to 18. After changing out the rear gears, I am now at a steady 16.8, which I think is pretty fair mileage for city.
I'm getting about 14+ city but my issue is my right foot.
I'm having too much fun running her in the higher rpm's and listening to that sweet growl.
