Hey all - I was thinking of changing out the cats and was wondering which pipe I should go with. I know Mangflow has a X pipe now. What exactly is a off-road pipe.
hmmmm. options I see...
really not quite sure I want to pursue this or not, but thought I would be some insight from you all.

To put it simply, an off-road pipe has no cats, and therefore wont be passing any emissions tests. They are high performance pipes made for the track. Not to say that nobody runs them on the street.
X Pipes have more of an "exotic" sound and H pipes have the more classic american muscle sound. Or so thats what most people tell me.

I think an x-pipe is also supposed to add a tiny bit more HP because the exhaust flows a bit faster through it than the h-pipe design. I basically have an off-road h-pipe after gutting my cats, and it has a very deep throaty sound. There is a sound clip floating around of this setup taken by another member (2005MustangGT). I think an x-pipe would have a bit less throatiness and sound smoother.

X pipes dont seem to sound all the same.
Some are raspier then others.....I have the Magnaflow X pipe on all three of my cars...and I love it....
I had the option of running Hs or Xs on all of my cars- as we still build both Xs and Hs here....
Of course sound is opinion.....but IMHO I think they sound wicked
After hearing the H and the X, I liked the X better...
Of course sound is all personal opinion....
and anyone who thinks

X pipes make more hp then H pipes and our X pipe actually made more torque then our H pipe as well.
We are a few months out from having the off road version...however the hp gains between the catted and non-catted are very close....
(Our next releases will be a single exhaust and a dual exhaust for the V6s)
We only saw about 2rwhp difference between the off road and catted X pipes though....the only big difference was sound....off road was definitely louder!
Thanks
Brent

My understanding is that horsepower is almost a toss-up (close one way or the other depending on who is quoting the numbers). Therefore, my decision is based solely on sound. Sound is a personal opinion, and I recommend you do some research.
Mustangexhaust.com is a good place to start. sign up and listen to the clips.
Note that the new 05's may sound a little different than older mod motors, and few people have '05s with custom exhausts... So basically all bets are off.

Thanks for the advice. I am very happy with my setup right now... off-road h-pipe with the Magnaflow axle-back. If the off-road x-pipe isn't going to add for then 1 or 2 HP, it's not worth the $300 to get one. I guess I'll wait a few months and I'm sure Magnaflow will have a sound clip of their off-road x-pipe and I'll decide then.

Is the catted X pipe quieter than the stock H-pipe that comes with the car? I installed a Bassani X-pipe on my '99 and it was quieter than stock with the stock exhaust setup, and I wasn't too crazy about it.

Yeah, an x-pipe is going to give you a little better airflow (which equals a little better HP), and it's going to sound a bit smoother. The h-pipe might sound a tiny bit louder just because it will be a bit deeper and have some more rumble. But probably too close to call as far as loudness. Don't make your decision based on that. I would make it on the sound. X-pipes sound more like a sports car while the h-pipe sounds more like a muscle car.
