OEM Driveshaft (Noodle) Install Question
OEM Driveshaft (Noodle) Install Question
Why does the OEM DS install instructions (205-01-1 through 205-01-3) say the DS flange needs to be indexed for re-installation?
The OEM DS that came off my car when the Spyder DS was installed wasn't the original DS the car came with...I had the 75 mph reverberation that was fixed under warranty with the new DS.
If this indexation wasn't done, and I need to re-install the OEM DS at some point, what do I do? Just install and test?

So the trail and error is related to vibration while driving? Do I rotate 180ยบ if vibration is detected?
You could have saved yourself the install and test part if you had marked the shaft couplings at the trans & rear end flanges. That would have insured the balance was the same on re-installation.
You might get lucky and hit it the first time... ya never know...
Hopefully, you won't ever have to re-install that OEM DS.

I have a slight murmur on the Spyder at 100+ mph...mostly on decel (I guess I just can't feel it on accel due to the engine/tranny/exhaust NVH).
I'm gonna have the Spyder rotated first 90ยบ and then 180ยบ to see to see if that helps..(suggestions as to whather to do 180ยบ or 90ยบ first are welcome). If not, I'll have it removed and sent to a blance shop to see if it's out of balance. If it's in balance and rotating it doesn't solve the high speed vibe, then I'm reinstalling the OEM noodle.
Hope it doesn't come to that! Please post your feedback.
Thanks!
What did your installer set the pinion angle at on the Spydershaft, that might be causing your problem, I think the angle should be -1 1/2 to -3 1/2 degrees on a one piece DS..

Marc.... I believe we have all had the 20/20 hindsight at sometime or other working on cars... I really didn't intend to point the finger at you for the oversight... if I do that, three fingers are pointing back at me..

The pinion angle debacle! The shop *thought* they set it at -2ยบ to the DS, thinking the flat piece at the bottom of our 8.8 pumpkin is parallel to the pinion, but it isn't, it's off 2ยบ, so they actually set it at -4ยบ to the DS.
Someone on the S197Forum.com posted the manual from Spicer/Dana on how to install a 1 pc DS and what the maximum operating angles are for U-joints, and so I re-set the pinion angle to the spec in the manual, and then re-set it several times playing with the angle but in keeping with the rules set out in the Spicer manual, and I still have the "murmur" starting at ~100 mph (and for any "other parties" reading this, those speeds were reached on a closed course). I currently have the PA set as follows (I reference all the driveline angles in keeping with the Spicer rules): Tranny -1.5ยบ/DS -4ยบ/Pinion -1.5ยบ.
To summarize, the 3 rules set out in the Spicer manual for U-joints are:
- There must be at least 1ยบ of operating angle at the U-joints;
- There should not be more than 1ยบ of difference between the tranny and pinion;
- The maximum operating angle at either U-joint should be 3ยบ
Oh, and guess who manufactures the U-joints on the Spyder? Spicer (a Dana brand)!
Speculation is that the OEM noodle, which in fact has a bult-in mass damper (the rear section), masks a problem inherent to the 8.8 rear end used in our cars. So this murmur might not be a DS related item at all, but I'm tryin to take the necessary steps to eliminate it as such.
I tried attaching the Spicer/Dana pdf (invaluable info IMO), but just as with pics, I'm unable to upload....if anyone wants it, email me at S197.Mustang@hotmail.com and I'll send it to you
