Thumbs up

So, I just picked my car up from the shop....yes, they stayed to work on it until 9:30pm. I have a bit gear whine, is this to be expected or should everything be as quiet as stock? Other than being slightly annoying, is this whine causing any damage? I am heading out to Pittsburgh tomorrow so I hope not....

Let me know guys, thanks!

IMO, a little more whine with the 4:10 is normal and to be expected. If thats it and no vibration, etc, think your good to go.

Just had my 4.10s installed today. They were quiet today on the way home, but will test em out more this weekend. I thought they would have made more of a difference from the stock gears though.

Whoa, really?? I'm considering 3.90's for my non existant Stang because I thought 4.10's would be too much. Elaborate more, please. Also, are you manual or automatic trans?

There is only a 10% difference between your 3.55s and 3.90s... don't hesitate on the 4.10s. I have an automatic, and I went from 3.31s to 4.10s. One thing is for sure... 4.10s are not too much.

Don_w is this stang ur daily driver? if so what kinda gas milage do you get with the gears?

Also this is open to anyone but im new to modding engines and drivetrains on cars. Can someone explain to me how the gear changes work and what performance can be gained from them. i kno of 3.70, 3.90 and 4.10 gears and such but what will it gaine me? will it affect the car as a daily driver?

Agreed, 4.10s are not too much, even with a 5sp. I was afraid they might be but they definitely are NOT! Take that baby to 6000 RPM, shift, and she only drops to ~3800. She pulls hardcore through the gears now!

I'll tell the shop about the whine since I have to call them tomorrow and tell them I want my stock gears back...they forgot to give them to me!

Mine is a stick. What I meant about my comment was I thought it would be a night & day difference going from the stock gears to the 4.10's. Don't get me wrong, it does feel better but I thought it would kick more off the line.

Mine is a daily driver and I am making a trip from Baltimore, MD to Pittsburgh, PA tomorrow. In the past I have gotten about 22-23mpg. I will let everyone know what type of mileage I get this time around.

Anyone else have any comments about my gear whine? Is a little bit of whine to be expected with the 4.10s?

Yup, daily driver... 50-mile roundtrip to work every day in SoCal traffic. I average 17-18 during normal daily driving, and 23-24 on the open road with the cruise set at 75-80mph. At 80mph in OD, the engine is turning about 2750 rpm.

I'll echo Don in regards to the gas milage, it's exactly what I'm getting. I have the Motives and have a little whine on deceleration from about 50-38mph. It goes away as soon as I accelerate. I haven't decided if it's an issue for me or not, it's not bad and no one riding in the car has commented on it. I've been meaning to talk to the installer but haven't gotten around to it. I was worried about going through first to quickly but found that wasn't really the case, I use first all the time, now if I could just figure out what's causing all that smoke I see in the mirror 4:10's are a great gear for the 05.

Chris, I'm convinced that 4.10's are a roll of the dice for us. If you can tolerate the noise, you made out OK. Those with a quiet install should consider yourselves lucky. Questionable carrier quality and not so great noise isolation seem to be the main culprits. Throw in a less that perfect install and, Wallah, whine and vibe. I was not lucky - I have both - and my install seems to be done properly. Next week we will swap the Precision's for FRPP's. Hate to say, I'm not optomistic. If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to the 3.55's and look for another way to go faster. Can you say ProCharger?

Anyhow, the whine shouldn't be damaging - except to your sanity.

Side note: My 2004 F-150 has 3.73's and I can detect some whine at about 50 mph. But my truck is so well insulated, I have to listen hard to hear it. In my GT, the differential sounds like it's right behind my ear. Oh yeah, it is.

I agree, the car is not insulated too well. I noticed that the day I drove it home from the dealer. The roads where wet, I had the stereo off and it sounded like I had no rear window. I've got a 4 hour drive to Pittsburgh today so we'll see how this whine affects my sanity.

I don't have any vibrations so I guess I'm lucky in that respect and the whine is where most people said it was, decelerating between 50 and 60.

4.10's are too much in a manual if:

You like to take your hand off the shifter between gears. :drive:

You looking for good gas mileage above 75 mph.

You enjoy that low rpm flat spot in every gear.

The 4.10's are a blast when your in the mood to run up through the gears. When you're not, shifting to 2nd, 3rd and 4th before you've gone a block can be a little bit of a pain. Sometimes I will leave a light in 2nd, but only if I'm on a downhill slope. Overall I'd say they are a fantastic mod for this car.

You'll be at about 2500 rpm's at 70 as opposed to 2100 with the 3.55's. Only dogs with sharp hearing can detect my whine above 70 - very high pitched. RPM's and fuel economy start ot become issues for me above 75 or so.

Good luck on your trip - great weather for it. Let us know how it goes.

Welp, I made it out to Pittsburgh around 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday. I had cruise control set at 75mph @ ~2600rpm for the large majority of the trip (there were a few times where I accidently dropped into 4th and hit 100 ). I averaged 22.2 mpg, and I am completely content with that number.

As far as the whine goes, it seems to be the worst at about 65mph. I talked to the shop while I was on the road and they told me the gears set up to the thousandth of an inch(?). I guess I'll have to learn to deal with the whine. I gave my girlfriend a ride and she said she didn't notice the whine at all (that's a good thing). Then I took my dad for a ride and he told me he LIKED that noise, said that's what power should sound like.

Overall, two thumbs up for the gears, a great mod and 4.10s are NOT too much for a manual.

Hey Chris, John here from Maryland (the Mt. Airy car show). So it sounds like mileage dropped just a bit, the car gains considerable acceleration, and is livable at highway speeds. Given that I'm looking for a cheap commuter so I can garage the Mustang most of the winter, I think I can live with it too. Sounds like a line item for my Spring 2006 list.

By the way, the C-stripes came out nice. There's a thread over in Exterior Mods.

John
