New 1/4 mile times..... feedback?

Hi everyone-

Went to the strip today with the crew from Brenspeed. This is my first trip to the track with the blower and 17" 275/40 BFG drag radials. My best run was:

RT: .588
60': 1.837
330: 5.320
1/8: 8.068
MPH: 88.71
1000: 10.441
1/4: 12.449
MPH: 108.89

I was hitting the rev limiter (6500) while crossing the line in 4th gear. I have 4.10s in the rearend. I did have three 12.6 runs with MPH from 112.9 to 114.34. I tried running the BFG drags at 20, 18, and 16 psi and actually had the best luck at 20. What do you guys think- is this about right or do I suck at driving lol?

The DA was 2186- thanks for those links Don_W.

You could have ran a low low 12 if you stayed in 3rd at the finish line. Each shift takes away time. But I am not sure you want to go any higher than 6500rpms though.....

Uh, about making it into 4th- as I mentioned I was at 6500rpm in 4th at the line- it would not be possible to keep it in 3rd across the line lol.

Sounds like it's time for some taller tires. 114mph should be about 6200rpm with 4.10s and 275/40-17 tires. If you switched to a 28" tire (like the 325/45-17 M&H drag radial), you could go up to 126mph at 6200.

I agree with Don... it would seem that you need a little bigger tire to take some of that 4:10 gear out. You would ideally go thru the gates between 6000 and 6200 in 4th gear. I would definitely get out of that 6500 range. You know me... I am a little skittish. As far as whether you suck as a driver I guess I would point out that Don's Donna is cutting something like .007 RT's or even better. I think you just need somemore practice unless you like being beat by a girl. P.S. I don't know what these guys above are talking about staying in third gear. DUH!

What kind of strip was this that you were in 4th gear at the line?
Are you SURE it was 3rd and not 4th.

If you almost hit rev in forth that means you were going about 125/135 and that my friend is not possible.

It's possible with smaller tires and higher gear ratio.

He has 4:10 gears not the stock 3:55's. Do some homework before you post PLEASE!!!!!!!

You may need different gears, It maybe considerably faster with the stock 3:55's now with the vortech. The 4.10s are to make a n/a car pick up rpms faster. with all the boost up top you can pull though the top end with no issues. I wouldn't worry about r/t at all if you are trying to find your fastest time. If its over 1 sec, who cares. It just distracts you from your launch. With the old body style, I knew guys in the 11's with 3:27 rears.

4:10s with the blower sounds like a traction headache.

Yes, I was in 4th gear...... and I wasn't paying any attention to my reaction time, I was much more focused on launching and shifting. I plan on keeping the 4.10s because they're fun on the street, so maybe finding a taller tire is the answer for now.

Yeah, sure if his car was N/A with 3.55's he could cross in third, but he's not. The shame icon belongs to you on this one

I was not meaning shame to tom281. When I did the shame icon, I meant that he wouldnt want to cross the line at more then 6500 if he could stay in 3rd gear, which he cant. Also, the shame icon means "no,no,no".

What did I do wrong? I just meant if he could stay in 3rd gear across the line, which he can't,then he would be way over 6500 rpms with 4:10's. He needs gears like 3:73's or 3:55's to easily stay in 3rd across the line.

By the sound of the post you were agreeing that he should not have shifted to 4th... gotta do what ya gotta do... and if the car says its gotta shift its gotta shift

I know it needs to shift at some point, but I was just saying that IF he could stay in 3rd, which he CANT, the rpms would be alittle bit over 6500 with 4:10 gearing so he would not want to stay in 3rd.

With smaller tires those 4.10s can turn into 4.56 or 4.88s real fast... His speedometer might have said he was going 120 when in reality it was only 110 with the drag radials. A set of 4.56 gears in a stock S197 would turn 4th gear into the 3.55s 3rd gear.

Or raise your rev limiter to 6800! I'd probably just go with the taller tires like others have suggested.

BTW, I drove my first S/C S197 last night...what a blast! A friend of mine was kind enough to let me take his for a spin. He just got back from the Fun Ford Weekend in Houston and won the true street div. I think his best time was in the 12.40s. He has the saleen s/c with 9 lbs, full exhaust and 315 nittos on 18's. He had his redline set to 6800.

with that kind of power it would be impossible to cross the line in third gear unless he spun it to about 7500-8000.even with the 3.55's and the blower i was still crossing in fourth gear.now i have 3.90's.
