I have a 92 LX 5L and unlike most folks got the lowest rear end axle ratio possible (2.73). I spend 90% of time in Highway driving on interstate trips. I wasn't too concerned with quick accel but rather was after the best performance at 65 mph. Rpm is at 1750 at 65mph. The car has 200k on it now and the engine has been flawless, performance wise (knock on wood). Car has been a dream.
My question is, is the lower rpm the direct result of increased engine life? Contemplating a 05, no rear end options are available other than 3.55 for the stick. Will the performance of the engine suffer with 3.55 with the amount of highway driving that I do? I understand rpm to be about 2100 at 65mph, which is significant increase and not used to. Could I hope to make comparable 200k on the car? What options are available to switch to the lower gears? Would have prefered this from the factory? Should this keep me out of an 05?

At 65mpg, the rpms are more like 1900, so a little closer to your '92. If you are driving 90% highway, you should get 300k out of it. The 4.6 is a very reliable/long lasting engine. I have seen several go past 300k. Just take care of it and you'll be fine.
Oh yeah, don't let ANYTHING keep you from buying an '05!!

Well, with 4.10's I'm at 2900 rpm's. I say put in 4.30's.
This thread is quite different from what I'm used too. I suppose that's why they make all different options and such, to meet the different needs or desires.

Remember, the 3.55's are hooked up to taller tires. I forget the exact number, but the 3.55's are the approximate equivalent total revs-per-mile on the 2005 as 3.27's in a 2004

running at higher average rpms consistently... yes you will likely decrease the life of the engine, it's a give and take game... any mods to increase horsepower or the operational characteristics of the vehicle are more then likely going to break something, wear down the engine in the long run. It's why they say, if ya can't afford to fix it if it breaks, then don't mod it yet.

Sp let me get this straight. If I get the 4:10's, am I shortening the life of the engine?
