Need help reoiling an air filter

I have a S&B Cone Air Filter for my JLT CAI.

I've always been nervous about over oiling my filter so usually just buy a new air filter.

I have a K&N re-oiling kit but it's unclear how much oil I should put on.

Too little and it doesn't filter dirt well and too much, you fowl up your MAF sensor and TB.

At the top of the filter, you place a little amount of oil. It will wick down over a period of an hour give or take. Ive been using K&N type filters for 15 years and never had a problem.

I just cleaned and re-oiled mine this weekend. When reoiling just run a thin bead of oil down the ribs of the filter. Your first thought is I don't have enough oil on it because it is not coated everywhere. Like the poster above. Let it set for several hours and it will wick onto the entire filter surface.

To put your fears to rest, K&N states (pretty aggressively I might add) that it's a myth that bad can come from over-oiling the filter. See here:
http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm

Anyway, I cleaned and oiled mine with no probs. I thought the directions that came with the K&N recharge kit where pretty clear and if you follow those you'll be fine. When you clean it, the filter will get whitish after it dries. When you oil it, it will go back to red. Do a light coat at first and let sit. Then look at it in bright light. If it looks uneven and see some whitish parts, then there is not enough oil. Do another light coat. Repeat until satisfied. If you think you've overoiled it.. you can always clean it again and start over. No biggie. The kit I used had a spray can rather than a squeeze bottle.

I have always done mine say at night before bed and appling to each rib let it stand overnight pop it in in the am and away I go Vroom Vroom. puzzeling that my K&N looses it's redness to it ? I wonder what that means if anything or do I have to replace it to get it red again ?

That just means K&N doesn't feel they should buy new MAF sensors for people who use too much oil on their filters.

And since we lost the thread about PCV catch-cans, MAKE SURE YOU ONLY USE AIR-FILTER OIL IN YOUR AIR FILTER. Stories of people using engine oil make me break out in shivers. :S

After speaking to two Ford dealership service managers, they both said use very little oil on the element. They even have just washed the FORD bullitt air cleaner element and did not reoil it without issues. I wouldn't go that far, put I start at the seam and lightly spray with oil.

After washing the filter I always let it dry completely before adding any oil. As mentioned let the oil wick after a fresh coat for at least a few hours.

makes perfect sense as water & oil don't mix ! I usually prop mine in the laundry room up high while the dryer is in use , seems to help then oil then wait then reinstall & if I take my time on it I just drop in the factory unit all of 5 min to reinstall.

The sun works too for drying especially if you are in SoCal where it's 100 degrees... LOL

I have the WMS filter and the K&N spray oil. I figure when it's just red, it's done, as long as it isn't soaked and dripping. I usually let it sit awhile [an hour or two seems adequate to me] before I put it back on. No problems in 60k miles of use and lots of cleanings.
