Interesting article on how to improve your MPG. They used a 05 Mustang GT as a test car. The air conditioning test was a surprise.

Cool article, I'm glad someone's actually published a test.

Bahahahahahaha, bahahaha. Is that even possible in the GT?

Good Find. Plus that they used a Satin Silver Mustang
Also, 30.7 mpg for the GT is very good. (No A/C, Windows down)

I can't believe I took the time to read that article. At least now I know what I thought I knew already, if that makes any sense.

Agreed...

Hey, if you put a sail on the roof and never use the engine, you'll get even better MPG... doesn't mean you should do it. 0-60 in 20 seconds? Got the wrong car.

The article tried to test a few theories... importatly how much the A/C and the tire pressure affected gas mileage

One of the great benefits of driving a manual is shifting into N when coasting on long downhills, it helps mileage out substantially IMO.

If you're in high enough a gear you aren't saving much. Plus, if you ever need to gas it, you're screwed. I'm not a fan of "neutral-driving".

Mustang
With lead foot - 18.1 mpg
With feather foot - 23 mpg

Apparently their foot didn't have enough lead in it. Only 18mpg? I know they could have gotten lower than that.

Hello, my name is Leadfoot! My windows will be up with the A/C on and cruise control off. The loop they drove must be downhill all the way around. I can get less than 18mpg just thinking about driving fast.

Method: We drove the same loops as before, once by accelerating aggressively 15 times at three-fourths throttle from zero to a cruising speed of 75 mph. We also applied the brakes hard as if coming to a stoplight. In the second loop we accelerated moderately 15 times at one-fourth throttle to a cruising speed of 70 mph. We braked lightly to a full stop
This is BS. The fuel economy gains are all in the braking NOT in the accelerating.

Go ahead an mash the gas, just don't hit your brakes hard (look far ahead to anticipate when you will have to slow down), and you'll get great mileage, it's as simple as that.

With a lead foot you get 18.1mpg? Wow...I think I probably have a titanium foot.

12mpg here...

Haven't read the article yet BUT...I'll say this much:

On another forum (gasp!) I'm running an impromptu "Gas Mileage" thread and documenting the results in a spreadsheet. Yea I know, too much time on my hands.

But really, ever since gas spiked, who hasn't thought of what they can do or how well they're currently doing?

My idear was to not only log everyone's MPG, but to also, where possible, log their "Average MPH" speed as given by the Message Center computer. Just to also get an idea of what kind of driving they do...more city, or more highway, etc. The results are kinda cool, and definitely reflect the possibilities of how well you MIGHT be able to do in comparison only to others who have your same average MPH (meaning, for the most part, fairly similar driving conditions).

It's also seperated out by vehicle engine/trans combos. The V6'ers are included, so there's 4 categories - V6-Stick, V6-Auto, GT-Stick, GT-Auto.

For the record I logged that I get 17.5 MPG average out of a tank, at an average speed of 28 MPH - traffic pretty much SUX in my area. But, that's about in line with the other guy with a GT-Stick that has about the same average speed-per-tank (driving conditions) as I do.

And right now I'm at 21MPG at an average speed of 29 miles per hour since fill-up. I've been a little lighter on the gas, because I wanna see what's possible. But I know when I get down to the last 1/4 tank I'll loose my self-control and blow it completely. Just driving pretty regular, nothing too special. Nor too mellow.

I got about 9 entries for the GT-stick that show anywhere from 21 MPG at a 40MPH average speed per tank, to 16.5 MPG at an average speed of 28 MPH per tank. The V6-Stick guys (4 entries) are leading the pack with 24MPG / 35 MPH average per tank, the V6-auto's (4 entries) are about 20-21 MPG at the same speed/driving conditions. The funny thing is, the Auto-equipped GT's are third in the rank at 19.6 MPG, but only 3 people gave up numbers.....personally I think the auto-GT guys are layin' low on this one since their mileage should be a bit worse than the stick-GT's.

Kinda interesting. I'd be up for doing the same thing here if there's any interest. But most of the crowd here seems more into performance and performance mods, than mileage, so I wasn't sure it'd fit in, the other place is more general mustang owners of all different breeds and engines.

Here's where it stands so far if interested....(hope linking to a different forum is cool here)
