I saw an auction on Ebay for an MMR intake. The auction states there is no need to retune the computer to acheive the gains. I sent a email saying I think that is misleading based on the info I have learned from this site. I said it can gain it, but will lose it if not retuned. A MMR Tech respond:

My Email:
"
MMR has dyno tested and proven its kits to bring you a great bolt on for your 05' that requires no custom tuning to get the claimed gains
I think this ad might be misleading. I have talked with people that have the MMR kit on their '05. They got the gains initially without a custom tune. But shorlty after the car compensated and the gains were lost. A custom tune is requried to acheive AND maintain the gains."

MMR Reponse:
This is 100% not true, I am an ex-Ford Mass air specialist and have dynoed over 50 of the 05 Mustangs with our kit, the gains are not "compensated" as you put it and have in fact shown higher gains once the vehicle has had some mileage put on with our kit. PLease let us know if you have any other questions. MMR Tech

That totally contradicts everything I have read and been told by various tuners... you might see a gain but will never get the true potential of the mod w/out an appropriate tune

From my tunes and dynos, and others at the shop, plus the the others that have bough the MMR kits on this site - that is totally incorrect. You MUST have a tune to get the 15rwhp like I did. I only got 3 - and that was 1 MONTH after i installed. I will contact Mark.

Time to give MMR a call. When I received the kit it included a piece of paper where they tell you that "because of the different size in the MAF sensor intake you will get a different fuel ratio and that will cause the engine light to come on. Although this will not harm the engine, we are working with several tuners on getting a fix for this". May not be word for word but that sums it up. Guess I am gonna have to dig up that piece of paper, create a pdf and post it.

We don't need to start a bashing post. I got 15rwhp out of it. It is worth it. If you don't have somthing constructuive to say, why say anything at all ?

I know you are not directing that at me, and I agree. I did not post this to bash, but more to get opinions and maybe a clarification.

Sorry, no not at all. It was directed to O5GT. This is a good thread - needs to be addressed.

hmm...there are a few people on this site with the MMR intake who have had the retunes done. i'm guessing MMR wouldn't lie to us, but Lee from c&L even admitted their CAI requires a retune, even with an identially machined mass air housing, because the open air filter is letting in more air than the stock box.

so confusing.

My point exactly. C&L first said they don't need a tune and now say they do. Now people are posting that MMR does not need a tune when MMR all along has said you do.

I would like clarification as well.. I saw the same Ebay ad and inquired myself with MMR.They are in Oxnard Ca and I live in Simi Valley (20 mi away).Mark responded Via email with the same response. " A custom tune is not required to achieve the claimed gains". I had been hearing the contrary on this and other sites for a long time now!...What is the real deal?..I want one of these or something similar but don't want to be dealing with the check engine light etc. if at all possible?...Can somebody get to the bottom of this who has been dealing with MMR?..or even better, maybe this mark person over there can provide a post on the forum as to what the story is...

Let me offer a possible explaination of the problem. I suspect that the sensor in question is really not a true Mass Air sensor but rather a Air Temp and Air Pressure sensor. A true Mass Air sensor heats a wire in the air stream to 200 degrees c and then measures how much electrical current is needed to maintain the wire at 200 degrees c. If you open up the air filter, it flows more air. The MAS senses this, adds more fuel and the a/f ratio remains corrent. I suspect the '05's sensor is not able to correctly read the increased air flow and therefor thinks everything is ok. But the O2 sensors see a lean condition and turns on the MIL.

Just an idea

Hey guys, sorry we didnt get on here sooner to help people understand the benifits and requirements of our kit. First of all none of our customers have made anything less than about 5 flywheel horsepower with our kit (again with no custom tune). Our average customer pics up about 8rwhp with no tune and we have seen as much as 15rwhp with no tune. We realize that some people have made less HP and of course some have made more, this is the age old argument with different vehicles and different dyno's. The check engine light issue is our biggest concern and this of course may require a custom tune on some vehicles to turn off, the vehicle has simply detected the increase of air flow and it is beyond the pre programed parameters. It is in no way harming the vehicle and should be no cause for concern and in fact as mentioned in our instructions most vehicles calibrate to this and turn off the light shortly thereafter. Are the custom tunes worth it, definitely, many of our customers have picked up 10-15 additional HP with our kit and the custom tune for it, is it required? No. But the gains on average are smaller.

Please feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.

Good grief. All the sudden the MMR kit is looking awfully competitive with the C&L.

Decisions, decisions.....

Since I am still not sure...

Does this mean (basically) any kit will not require a tune. However, you will only gain the minimal benefits unless you tune.
