Looking into Upgrading Cams --> Need Help!!!

So I am looking into replacing my Stock Cam w/ Possibly the Hot Rod Cam; while at the same time putting in a set of CMDP's as well....

Current mods: Intake, Custom Tune, UDP's, LT's + Catted H, and catback...

Are the "Hot Rod Cams" my best options or should I go w/ a Comp NSR Cam??? Or is there a better cam out there??? What can I get the most out of??? Thanks guys much appreciated!!!!

from what i understand, the hot rod cam is just for sound. not really much power to be had from it. (somebody correct me if my info isnt correct)

im about to go with some comp stage 2 vsr blower cams myself.

the comps are same price as the hot rods anyways, might as well get something with proven power gains.

edit: just looked it up, XFI NSR COMP CAMS STAGE 2 is cheaper than the hot rod cams i have seen. dyno test results listed here also

edit 2: and here is a dyno chart where somebody only got 8 HP from the hot rod cams Link

I had the Thumpr Cams in my auto. They are more for show than go. I did not gain or lose HP or TQ, but the constant head turning by others was nice. When I get home I throw up the youtube link so you can hear.

Since your asking.."what can I get the most out of" than the NSR or the VSR are the way to go. They wont sound much different than stock but will give your more HP etc that you are probably looking for.

You did not state weather you had an auto or manual. If you have an auto you may need to upgrade your stall converter as well. Which means your are creeping closer to the entry (low cost) superchargers, which will net the largest HP increase by far.

Dez, Thanks for the info!!!! Much Appreciated! So the Stage 2 NSR Comp Cam would work well w/ a NA motor w/ bolt ons from what the Brenspeed site says would work well... But Does anyone know about the Drive-ability? This is my DD and want to squeeze as much out of it as I can but don't want to hurt the motor...

BTW, sorry I didn't mention this before --> Car is a Manual

Been running the NSR Comp Cams that Brenspeed installed in Feb 2008 without any issues in my DD auto trans car. And it is true..you can buy show (or sound) or go. But not both!! Get the NSR cams for best performance!

Curious to know as well. Cams are in the future and I would like to know the best options before that time comes. Been looking at the Comp cams just wasn't sure exactly which one.

here is a video of the comp cams thumpr stage 1, i went with these cams because they have sound along with some power gains. they are compatible with the stock gears and springs just need limiters or lockouts.

70MACH,
Can you tell me a bit more about where you noticed the power gains from the NSR Comp Cams? Did you notice any throttle response increase? Was it a very noticable gain like when you install a cai and tune?

I'm looking into having Brenspeed installing those cams along with an electric water pump and steeda delete plates in spring.

how about a sound clip with your exhaust, sounds like a winning combo.

Your setup sounds pretty close to mine (plus the cams and CMDPs), but I have no cats...

This is how Comp NSRs sound at idle and rev on my car:

I changed two things at the same time. I went from an offroad H-pipe to longtubes and added the NSR cams. Together I gained 41 rwhp and 11 lbs torque. I would say I got the total advertised gained of 25 rwhp from just the cams. I believe the 11 lbs of torque came from the longtubes.

Starting from an idle thru 6500 rpm this is what I notice with the NRS cams. Sitting at a stop light the idle is a little rougher than stock. You can hear a slight lope. Under normal acceleration they feel just like the stockers. They have no drivability issues for my daily driver. Where you really notice the improvement is from 4000-6500 rpm. They pull harder up top and extend the useable rpm range of the engine. This is the area they were designed to improve. It is important to understand that no aftermarket cams add much if any torque #'s to our engines. The stock cams are really about as good as it gets in the torque department.
