Just went from 3.31 to 3.73 rear gear!

I've been waiting for someone with this exact gear swap to post. I honestly hate the 3.31's. 3rd gear is horribly long and they make the car feel a bit sluggish. I had considered 3.90's in the past, but a friend of mine with a CS pretty much exactly like mine has them and I didn't care for them(though his was an automatic). I absolutely do not want 4.10's, so 3.73's seemed logical to me.
Den,
any chance of a video of you going through 3rd gear?

I don't know about Antigini, but for myself there are a few reasons for not going with something like a 4.10. I have a 100+ mile commute on the days I use the Mustang, the gas would kill me at close to $3/gallon here. I also hope to go with FI in the future, it may be 3-4 years down the road but why install 4.10's now and then have to go back to something like 3.73's when I install a roots blower. With ~ 500hp that would make 4.10's in the car almost un usable in 1st. I don't want it to become a hassle to drive and enjoy.

You can get 3.90 but they are not Ford Supplied gears.....The 3.90 offered through FRPP are Motives. They can set-up where they are not noisy it just takes more effort and time than Ford Gears which are almost drop-in. Very close to stock on shims.
Ask around for a Ford Tech that moonlights with home gear installs. The going rate here for that is $175 for Fords and $225 for Motives + $50 for Lubricant (Motorcraft Synthetic 75W-140 and XL3 Additive) + $150 for Gears. Thats about $375-425 Total.

Just did 4:10's in my auto 2 weeks ago. Your numbers are pretty close. But I also added a Motive rebuild kit that has new pinion and carrier bearings plus gasket, shims, additional crush collar and pinion nut. So add another $80 for this kit. You don't want to press off used pinion bearings and put them on your new gears.

Antigini-
I have an iPhone that does videos so I'll see if I can make a vid for you (maybe this weekend).
As far as 4.10s, when I was doing my research it seemed like everybody running 4.10s had an automatic trans. I actually had a rough time finding gear change opinions from people with manual transmissions. It seems like 4 out of 5 posts were from automatic guys. I got to the point of being 75% sure about 3.73s and then asked the installer at the dealership what his preference was (4.10 or 3.73). He said he did many of each and test drove all. He really liked 3.73s and thought the 4.10s were a little steep. My car is my everyday driver for 2 hours a day so I figured I'd stick with 3.73s. Besides that I get really sick of a car thats too geary. I like a little bit of cruise time between gears.
Another good point is that on a hard launch my car sticks and does not blow the tires out very easily. Dont get me wrong, I could smoke em if I wanted, but on a good solid hard launch it holds it to the road. Its hard to believe it pulls as hard as it does and the tires aren't breaking loose. I have to wonder if the 4.10s would overstep that boundary and be too hard to not spin the tires.
I will probably get my azz handed to me from a 4.10 car some day but I really like how my car drives right now. It seems just perfect. Any more gearyness and I think I would be getting sick of it. For me my car is really really fun right now. I have to say that I am really happy with how the 3.73s feel on my manual but if I had an auto I think I would have went with 4.10s (since I wouldn't be doing all the shifting). I hope this helps anyone thinking of this change but please remember it is just my opinion.

I have a new Edge Mustang, But I had 4.10s and removed them in my auto. I have 3.55s but I am going to 3.73s or 3.90s.. 4.10s were terrible on trips on highway. over 2800 rpm at 60-65 with 17 inch wheels..
Now with 3.55s car feels slow on shifts

hey, i was wondering cause i have some in a box somewhere in my house...gotta find where my wife put them when i get back stateside..lol....but did you have to retune it? and how much did the install run you?
#29
Not sure on the Diablo but if you have an SCT you can adjust it with the tuner. No new tune needed.
