How to Spend 10K ?
Hey Guys,
I'm looking to put around 10k into my Stang for performance in the not too distant future. My 3 requirements are:
1. As much power possible
2. As reliable as possible
3. As street legal as possible
So I'm thinking, forged internals and a blower ??? Input? Just what can I do with 10k?
thanks!

You can send the cash to me and I promise I will tell EVERYONE you have the fastest car around
Seriously though. If I had $10K burning a hole in my pocket and was dead set on spending it on performance mods, I guess I would go to SHM or some place similiar and get one of their stroker short blocks. Then pop over to Hellion or Ultimate Racing and pick up a twin turbo kit. While that was getting installed, I would probably have to save up a little more cash to replace the tranny ( sorry, blew your budget, but hey....not my money! ). Then pretty quickly after that I would be shopping for better brakes. OK, so that would probably total maybe $12k ( plus labor ). But yea, I would seriously consider something like that if I had the bucks.

Forged internals and kenne bell supercharger sound good. But if you make your car fast you need to spend the extra money on gears, drive shaft, tranny, and tires.Remember,if you make the motor powerful and don't upgrade everything else you are just asking for trouble.

ha ha. The thought has crossed my mind. Don't know if I can wait, though. How much could I realistically get for my GT with 3k miles on it?

Without a doubt that is what I would do.
No offense but its not wise at all to spend 10 grand on car. It would not increase or even maintain the value of the car at all. You would have to find some freak thats not financially smart to buy your car for what you would want out of it.
10 grand is just not smart at all to invest in a car. Max I would ever invest is maybe 2 grand and that is it.

Hey David,
I think you are missing the point. Most motor heads don't consider resale value when upgradeing their car. It is all about the thrill of the extra power and having something a little better than the next guy. Let's face it. All of us lost about 3 K when we drove our cars off the lot. If I were going to make an investment in a car it would be in a 70Mach1 or Shelby. Which I did!!!!!!!!!!
Robert,
Go with the forged internals and a Kenne Bell or Whipple blower. Keep the boost under 10 lbs and I think minimal upgrades to the drive line will be necessary if you drive it with a little sense. Have a great time and don't worry about re-sale value.
Scott
Definately budget for a different tranny. Several companies such as SHM that are bringing the car up and over 500HP are replacing the tranny because they know the factory one can't handle that much power.

yeah, resale value is not my concern, especially since I plan to keep this car forever. I'll drive it til the engine blows up, then put another one in it. I didn't buy this car as an investment. I bought it for fun!

I say call up Kenny Brown performance and talk to them about their new products. Get a suspension brakes and tires then spend the rest on go fast parts and support.

Well said. You couldn't do better than Kenny Brown.
It wouldn't be too hard to blow $10K. Speaking of blown, that's the first thing to do, supercharger. That will wipe out 1/2 your budget. The rest would be best used in beefing up everthing else to handle the power (exhaust, forged crank/rods/pistons, tranny, BRAKES, susp. parts, etc.). If you have anything left, then go for the stripes and cosmetic mods.
Do it right and you'll have all the thrill of the Shelby!

Here are my plans for the car:
1) Painted on stripes $1600.00 ( completed )
2) Saleen Super charger and a custom Dyno tune. $5500.00
3) 500rpm loser torque converter $??? ( guessing $300-$500 )
4) Duck Tail spoiler. I am building my own out of aluminum because I do not like the plastic one offered so far. It will bolt in the same holes and be a one piece desing that wraps around the fenders a little. It will look a little like the shelby spoiler, but have more curves. I have the buck mold complete so far. I figure about $150 ( paint and materials )
5) 18" wheels and tires. I am thinking about old style center lines. However, I am going to use up the stock set first so it may take a while on the wheels & Tires. $1000 -$1200
6) Leather covered arm rest on the console and door panels. $100.00 - $200.00
7) Stainless tips ( for looks ) on the exhaust. I really like the stock exhaust sound and do not want to replace it.
8) Vented discs when the brake change time comes $500.00.
I think I would be completely satisfied with these modifications and they should be under 10K......

You might have your first customer here!
Got any pictures?
I would go with forged internals to make sure it can handle the boost and then go with the procharger supercharger. It's street legal, with forged internals it's reliable and it makes A TON of power. Then if you have money left over put some into that suspension so you can plant all that power and you are off and running.

So far, I just made a few cardboard templates and a plywood buck mold. I got side tracked putting a expoy floor system in the new garage so I have not worked on it in a while. I'll post a pic once I get it tacked together. I am hoping to have only three outside skin welds. ( where is it most likely to break ) Since I am going to have to beat it into shape and roll it out on the english wheel, I will probably still have to skim coat it to get that glass like finnish...
Obviously, this is not really somthing that I can make as a production unit... I really had not planned on selling them. To do that, I would probably have to go to fiberglass as the time to make one by hand out of aluminum is probably about 40hr of work, but I will see how it goes....
You should read 169stang's posts as he has already uncovered many of the weak spots in the driveline. namely #1 clutch, #2 rear diff, he is not even boosted yet and he has broken these. he stated the trany is next. Reading his posts will give you an idea of what is needed if your going to add power. Also you can never go wrong with forged internals....then a twin screw, kick in enough for a T56 and you will be golden
