How many miles before you had to replace the stock tires?

I ask because I'm eyeing different wheels and tires for "Thor". My stock tires have 18,000 miles on them (took delivery on 8/1/05), whats everyone else seeing?

Jon

I think that's kinda a tricky question..........

I have around 9500 miles on my car, and my front tires look like new. My rear tires are almost bald though...... not sure how that happens !

I have 30,000 km (~18,750 miles) on them and I switched them rear to front. Now I have almost new tires in the back and very good ones in the front.
I might have to install winter tires soon, but I'm still keeping the OEM Pirellis for next year. I'm sure they'll last until next winter (30,000 miles in total).

P.S.: I don't race and I've only got 3 or 4 burnouts on record so far...

I have 25,000 miles on mine and about 7/32nds. tread left on them. Still lots of good rubber left. I just replaced them with BFG KDWS on the 18" Fanblades though.

When they are bald or show the top of abe lincolns head, then replace them.

or if you want better tires, replace them.

i'm hoping mine wear out so i can justify to my wife buying rims and tires soon....

31K miles on them and still good tread here, I drive lots of twisties going to work too, so I'm very happy with the life of these Pirelli's.

34,957 miles and they have not reached the wear indicators yet, but they have no grip left. They are terrible from a stop in the rain. Bought the car Feb of 2005.

Oh ya and I did a track day during the MCA 30th at barber motorsports park, I did 6 20 min sessions if I remember right.

Now to talk the wife into new rims and tires....

18K, and my stockers are only half way done. The KB should fix that.

26K and have a bit of tread left. Will need tires in the next 5K miles. I push my car hard in the corners and have been to the strip.

I don't understand why you guys back tires are wearing out before the fronts. Is it a defect? Is there a TSB somewhere that I am misssing or what?

Yeah, it's called right foot meets the floor defect. Well known problem among Mustang owners. Sometimes causes uncontrollable smiling, yelling, whooping, and lots of smoke coming from the rear tires. Also seems to attract law enforcement, so if your foot has this defect, be careful!

The stock Pierrelli's are total crap.

They have no grip and when it's wet, they are positively dangerous.

Furthermore, they're practically indestructible. Did they decide to make them out of the hardest rubber they could find?

No grip? I think they have excellent grip dry, and decent grip wet. You could get a more aggressive tire for $200 each, and replace them every 15K miles, or you could stick with the Pirelli's for $79 each and have them last 40K miles. Granted, they are not a drag radial...but why would you want to run those for daily driving anyway? They would last like 5000 miles,if your lucky. For daily driving I'm very happy with the Pirelli's.

Also, I've never EVER had my car hydroplane and I have driven way faster than I probably should have in the rain plenty of times. Even with 30K miles on the tires, they still handle very well in the wet.

I have the same problem, bought car in Jan. 05, have 35,2xx on it and very little grip in the rain from a stop, way too easy to get the back end to squirm a bit or kick in the traction control. In the rain I have to stay under half-throttle otherwise it'll break loose even when already moving. In the spring, the tires are getting replaced no matter if they still have some tread left. I guess I know already what some of my tax refund is going toward.

Just saw the stock Pirelli's are going for $79 plus $10 shipping each (plus or minus a few $$'s depending on where you live). Not a bad deal, I was expecting worse!
